Indian here and we have a legal requirement for supermarkets and big retail stores to charge extra for plastic bags and I must say, it has deterred people from using plastic bags. In vegetable shops, small baskets and bowls are provided to you to pick out your produce and once you bill it, the cashier will help you put it in your bag. It is a good system and now even roadside and street cart vendors have stopped using plastic bags. They ask customers to bring own bags or they give paper bags.

I finally found a grocery store with a bulk section like this but they don’t allow you to use your own bags to fill 😤😤 so frustrating

I’m not zero waste but I love watching you for ideas to lessen my impact where I can and this is one I will be trying for sure.

For a lot of years I have stopped using single use plastic bags and I feel really proud about this . I don't forget them and I think they are a great way to reduce plastic waste ❤

This is wonderful! Yes I just got some reusable produce bags and I used them for the first time last week- I was so proud and didn’t use any single use ones! This has been fun learning all I can about being sustainable and thankfully my husband is on board and is adapting as well. I’m putting your shop on my Christmas list btw!

Show the haul! I live in San Diego and there’s only a handful of zero waste stores, and they closed the only entirely zero waste grocery store around. I love that you give suggestions for stores that aren’t on board yet but you make it work. Cheers!

Pressure corporations even more so. Regular citizens make litter and waste, no lie, but corporations 100x more than each person combined. I used to work at a retail clothing store. Every single item that we got in came in its own individual plastic bag, regardless of how many we got in the same exact size and color. Including panties. Each of the HUNDREDS of panties we had came in its own plastic bag (that was not recycled, it was put in the garbage dumpster). We had thousands of individual garments, all that came in its own plastic bag, and we were a small outlet of our chain, the regular stores of the company were 2-3 times larger and had far more merchandise, all shipped to them individually bagged.

I stopped using small reusable and regular plastic bags years ago for produce. I simply place all fruits, vegetables and herbs (cilantro, parsley, etc.) straight into the shopping cart, then everything goes into my fabric shopping bags as I pay at the counter.

Loved that line...we as consumers are our own solution to our current plastic problem. Ain't that the truth girlfriend! Always aiming to cut back on my own plastic intake whenever possible....Reduce, reuse, and recycle friends! 💚

In Ireland literally everybody uses reusable bags because to buy 1 single use plastic bag it costs at least 70 cent and single use plastic bags are made from cellulose.
So they are biodegradable but very strong.

I can't do this all now because my family doesn't want to "do all that extra stuff" but when i move out, I will start my journey:)

I use my reusable bags when I remember 😅 but if we have chicken and the package is a little slimy, I like to have it in a separate plastic bag

Here in the Netherlands they only sell those bags that you have. Or paper ones. The plastic fruit en vegetable bags aren’t there any more. So you HAVE to.

Yes! I have a couple local zero waste stores for soap and other products products and I always support them even though it costs a little more, but you’re paying for non toxic food quality products so it’s worth it

I have never ever seen a grocery store with loose produce and bulk dispensers like that. It's almost ways all packaged in plastic in Ohio. At least in North Eastern Ohio

Absolutely should, but don’t kick yourself if you don’t. After seeing retail merchandise shipments, people at the grocery store aren’t the problem. We had a mid medium store and got through 4+ trash bags stuffed with plastic packaging A DAY

In many supermarkets here, the bags are compostable 😁

See what you got? 👀
