At 6:00, here is a workaround for people who don't have access to photoshop or any other texture editing applications:
1. Using the Main Texture (MainText) connect to a Sample Texture 2D node (make sure the preview is open).
2. Link the RGBA output to 3 separate Color Mask nodes.
3. Use the color picker tool and click the different colors of the blade on the texture preview.
4. Manually adjust the ranges until the Color Mask previews show the full blade area for each color.
5. Use 2 Add nodes to add the 3 Color Mask nodes.
6. Multiply by the Power node as shown in the video.
7. If you see any small bits of effect missing (along color edges for example), gradually add fuzziness in the Color Mask nodes until the edges are gone.

Thank you - this guide is an amazing intro to VFX graph

You should use vertex colour instead of pushing another texture to mask a mesh like that. Texture sample and generally fragment shaders cost more on the gpu.
I really enjoyed the video, thanks for the insights on the vfx graph

If anyone's Rotate 3D speed is different in-game than in the editor, use a multiply by deltatime.

Did Unity remove the Simple Systems from VFX graph? Experimental Blocks and Operators are enabled.
Unity 2020.3.32f1
Edit: Weird, restarting or updating Unity to 2020.3.33f1 fixed it, lol.
