Baptism was indeed a symbol. Thats why many people still do the same wickedness they did BEFORE getting baptized as they do AFTER. What changes you is the WORD OF GOD!! Reading and Applying it.

It is so sad how many people have been led astray by various so -called "experts" on Scriptural interpretation & meaning, and the "Christian" leaders who misinterpret & twist the Scriptures to their own liking / agenda. Also very sad how many individuals do not want to hear the Truth, but are always looking for the easiest & least costly way to salvation.

We are baptized by fire from the holy spirit, we start when we give ourlives to Christ and obey him.

I think water baptism is mainly a ceremonial thing, but It can be a good start for new believers... however, water baptism doesn't save anyone. Obeying Jesus does.

If water baptizme could save us, then it would be nothing else than a magical ritual.
Then salvation would no longer be in the hands of God and Yashua but in the hands of men: another way to work Yourself up to heavon.
However it still is more than just a symbolic act - or lets say: a symbolic act is a very powerful act. Even so important that Yashua says: Mar 16:16: "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that does not believe shall be condemned."
Even when here we see, that the believe is being stressed over the baptizme in the second part of the vers.
I believe important is to understand what the fight of faith is, and who only is actually able to build the kingdom and bring forth growth.

There are two theological schools on immersion (baptism): 1) Sacramental, and 2) Ornamental. In the Sacramental view, water baptism is effective and is what applies God's forgiveness of sin, as you are buried with Christ and raised again to newness of life. Most of Christianity actually believes this, and this is also the view of the earliest church in the first two centuries. The ornamental view, which you have espoused here, says it is only a symbol and has no real effect. The only group that believed this during the very earliest times in the church was the Gnostics.

The post reformation teachings about baptism and communion (eucharist) do not line up with the very earliest believers, people who were actually taught by the Apostles.

Baptism is required. Paul and the others did not endanger their lives for mere symbols. Paul states clearly that if you take communion without discerning the Lord's body, you are in great danger of getting very sick or even dying. That is not what happens because of mere symbols. The Sacramental view is the scriptural view, the Apostolic view, and the Early Church teacher's view.

A symbol of leaving your old life behind and come up anew. You must do what GOD asks of you to show him your love for him. Its a step of faith. To show people around you that your faith is real and you want a great relationship with GOD. That you are picking up your cross and following JESUS CHRIST our LORD and SAVIOUR. I agree with wou, but I have a question: In Mark 1:4 it says "John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins" I was wondering about what means BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS. With that phrase, I think that baptism is related to salvation. Am I wrong? thanks.
