What anxiety does to your pain

Pain is in your brain 🧠 doesn't mean that pain isn't real, but it means that you have incredible control over how pain is processed in your brain, even for surgery. How can the same anesthesia, same nerve block, same surgery, and even same doctors result in different pain perceptions?

There is a tremendous amount of mental health that goes into how you process pain and your ultimate perception of pain. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, and other mental health conditions can heavily influence pain perception.

I’m so intrigued by how anesthesia works, it’s so fascinating to me. I’m hoping to go into that field one day

I suffer from chronic back pain. My first fusion was at 29 and I’m now 59. Next month I’ll have a two level fusion with rods into my pelvis. My mother, has a similar history though her issues are cervical and upper thoracic spine; and started after she turned 70. We experience pain in markedly different ways. She feels terrible pain from simple procedures, like a gallbladder removal. I had it done as well and took off one week of work mainly because I had time to burn, not because I needed that much recovery time. All this to say, I’ll never cavalierly presume to judge how someone experiences pain.

in my opinion not being a professional, there's so many different things happening in someone's body to assume it's only anxiety differences that causes different amounts of pain. People's bodies and what's going on is different.
Why do professionals often assume anxiety is always the answer if they dont know the answer; there needs to be an extensive process to diagnose that just like anything else.

I had nerve root compression L4-L5 which caused a permanent charlie horse in my left calf.. worst pain I ever felt. I woke up from surgery screaming and crying with the same pain. My neurosurgeon explained why. Can you explain what that has to do with mental health please?

Ok here's one for you. I shattered my wrist went to the local hospital was made to wait for 3 hours before being seen. Was given a strong pain medication through my iv, according to the nurse who gave it to me that it should knock me out nope 15 mins and was wide awake needing more meds and still didn't fall asleep. I felt the needle sweeping over my bones while they were setting my wrist. I felt everything. Go in for surgery was given a nerve block and he.used a lot of the stuff. My hand felt heavy and asleep and wasn't able to move it. Went to the or was put under and felt the cutting and heard the doctor say this guy may end up with an amputation may not be able to help him. How is that possible. No pain meds help me

Very interesting how that works! The mind is incredibly powerful….What if the nerve block failed? Does that happen?
