ngl what helped me the most in tackling same face syndrome was starting to draw side profiles - was fun and also figuring out nose shapes helped me a lot to shape the whle face around them :p

This is the first time I’ve seen an artist repetitively redraw a person when tackling sfs. Seems like a really good exercise I’ll definitely have to try someday :)

A lot of my difficulty with faces was really with form and finding planes. I got pretty good at sketching the contour so I could copy photos and illustrate that way, but I had trouble constructing a solid-looking head in perspective for OC design, and no tutorial really helped with this. I even went through the entire Bridgman book on heads and faces and still struggled.

Then I got a bunch of toys and action figures, put them under a lamp and sketched those a ton and after that it got a lot easier to think about how to make it all work in perspective and make modifications - that was my actual bottleneck. Working with live objects means the contour is always shifting around every time your head moves, so it trains something different from photo reference.

I had a phase of fandoms where SFS was completely unapplicable. Object shows, Polandball, the such. And when I came out of it, I just didn't have same face syndrome. It was never really an issue, I just had that ugly 2018 fandom kid artstyle beforehand lol. Nice studies, btw.

Honestly I think if there was a guideline on how to draw different face shapes (oval, diamond, square, heart, round, etc) people would less likely fall in this trap, but unfortunately no one has done this before 😢
