From my experience, if someone suggests they're doing something wrong or causes them shame in some way, that's when they attack and the mask slips off. Any personal information you share with them isn't to genuinely connect; they just weaponize it against you.

The covert narcissist is by far the most damaging to a persons psyche.
You getting burned before you even know there is a fire.
Their loyalty lasts only as long as their attention span which is generally very limited.
Do the best thing you can for yourself and get away from this person.

It was SO DAMNED HARD NOT to call out his ludicrous comeback when I stated my reasons for needing to end the relationship. I insisted on doing it all via email to get everything in writing. His retort was classic covert narcissist behavior. Angry outburst, check. Denial, check. Blame shifting, check. Gaslighting, check. Playing victim, check. Attempts to get me to reengage, check.

The most difficult thing is that they fool so many outside the relationship. So when the relationship ends, the cards are stacked against you as far as finding someone who at minimum can think there might be another angle to the story than what the narcissist tells everyone. I’d settle for neutrally but he is so convincing I’ve decided to just move on to another life and hopefully new friends.

I'm ashamed to say I did go along with it for way too long. I thought I was being "supportive". In a way I guess I was. I supported his delusions, and other people's deluded impression of him.

Their passive aggression speaks volumes, it's unattractive.. and they wonder why people avoid them? Very unlikeable people to talk to for more than 2 minutes. I've learned to discredit their input entirely by narrowing it down to 30 seconds, but it is an active everyday process that's truly draining.

My mother to a T... distance is hard when it comes to family dynamics, but at this point, she now causes tension between my adult child and me. I understand that my daughter loves her "grandma", but my mother is still (covertly) abusive towards me so my daughter doesn't understand where my anger comes from. This year, I will disconnect from my mother and hope that my daughter will respect my choice as I try to respect her relationship with my abuser 🤞
