I'm decades out of college, where I studied high-end calculus.

I still find these super useful to keep the basics I use every day sharp.

This one was a bit harder! I personally did this:
1/6=.5×.75x
1/6=.375x
1=6×.375x
1=2.25x
1/2.25=x
4/9=x

Seeing none of *those* comments made my day a lot better

This one I tried to solve before knowing the answer, but sadly my method was wrong. However, i do see where i went wrong which is a plus. Great vid!

Necessary “I literally did it in 5 seconds this is so easy. No test is getting messed up by this. I learned this in Kindergarten” comment

If you see this and you’re the type of person to comment stuff like this, stop it, no one cares if you can do it quickly. It’s for the people who can’t. That’s my TED talk, thank you everyone.

To those who also love the videos: Please beware of the toxic comments that a lot of these videos have :(

I had a math teacher in middle school explain that typically when you has of that means multiply and is means equal to. So naturally now when I see it I read it as 1/6 = 1/2 * 3/4x

I did a different strategy
After 1/6=3/8x
4/24=9/24x
4/24(divided by)9/24=x
The denominators are the same so it’s just 4/9

A really easy trick is to remember that "is" means "equal =" and of means "multiplication" so:

1/6 = 1/2 * 3/4 * x

Easy method:
1/2 of 3/4 = 3/8
1/6 is 3/8 of something so just divide 1/6 by 3/8
(1/6) / (3/8) = 8/18
4/9

Or you can think of it as this instead.

1/6 is half of that 3/4, which means 2/6, simplified to 1/3, is 3/4 of the number.

You can find out what 1/4 of that number is by dividing 1/3 by 3, getting 1/4 of the number to be 1/9.

Multiply 1/9 by 4 to get the whole number and you get the answer of 4/9.

I’m glad there’s none of those comments even though this one was really easy I actually see why they chose this question, this can be really helpful teaching a person to translate words into numbers. You guys are doing an incredible job and ignore the haters

Multiply the result (1/6) with the inverses of the other fractions...

1/6 x 2/1 x 4/3 = (1 x 2 x 4)/(6 x 1 x 3) = 8/18

Simplivy...

(8 / 2) / (18 / 2) = 4/9

You have to really pay attention to the wording here. Where it says “of”, those two fractions can be multiplied. Then it will say, “If 1/6 is 3/8ths of a number”, then you simply multiply 1/6 by the reciprocal of 3/8 to get said number. This then simplifies to 4/9.

just by inverse reasoning --the double of 1/6 has to be 1/3, and likewise, reversing 3/4 to 4/3 and multiplying numerator and denominator gives the answer: 4/9

Nice to see an actually tricky question show up, even if the tricky part is just the translation between words and numbers.

(Never had algebra in my life), this is how I did it:

if 1/6 is the half of 3/4, that means 3/4 is equal to 1/6 multiplied by 2 (2 halves creates a whole, which in this case is 3/4).

simplify using percentage: 100% : 6 = 16.666 etc (so 1/6 in digits). Then do 16.666 × 2 = 33.333 etc (so that's the 3/4 mentioned in the equasion. Then do 33.333 divided by 3 (because 3 of the four) and then times 4 to get the awnser which is 44.444%

44% is about 4/9 in fractures (sorry for bad explanation).

Personally as a 13 year old:
2/6=3/4x \\*12
4=9x
-9x=-4 /:(-9)
x=4/9 EZ

I thought of the number as a circle then I shaded 3/4 of the circle in blue, then I cut the blue part in half. Each blue is 1/6 so the circle has to have less than 3 blues to be full so the answer is 4/9
