They're all great, and I'm not just saying that because Ilene Cooper made my whole life possible.

In which John talks about the crushing monotony and paralyzing terror of one's first years entering the post-school world of grown-ups, and how getting a mentor, like the one John found in the author Ilene Cooper, can get you through.

9 years ago, I was 22, unemployed, very broke, and completely paralyzed by terror. This video made me feel much less alone. Today, my baby puked on my face. After cleaning us both up, I thought, "John Green was right. This is definitely better than any day in my early twenties." Adulthood really does get a lot better.

"Find someone who's doing something you want to do better than you can do it, and listen to them."
I don't know why but I feel the need of take this phrase, write it on my wall and read it every time I wake up.

You should write a guide book called "Looking for Ilene" with guidelines on how to acquire this mystic all knowing figure!

This very accurately describes the experience I had during my first two years out of college. The part you left out is how fantastic it feels when you first realize you are accomplishing all of these things regularly on your own. Don't get me wrong. There's still the crushing fear that you will soon fail and lose all of this, but you're doing it for now. That's such an exciting thing.

How to become an adult:
1. You never truly become an "adult, " or how Americans define it. You are more or less molded by society and the people you interact with on a daily basis.
2. Find a job that'll keep you stable, an then go onto what you want to do (basically what John said).
3. This isn't really a "how to become an adult" video, this is more of a "how to survive modern society" video, which is more or less the same thing.
And 4. Thank you for making this video regardless. It helped me figure out a few things I was having problems with (I'm in college).

I watched this video 5 years ago as a community college student and now I have left school and found a job and I am still trying to find my Iline. Thanks for believing in us John.

Amazing co-workers is arguably better than an amazing job

"I wonder if I can take it down a button. No." So modest John. :)

I like the small moments like that when I can appreciate your humor (and good looks). You're clearly an interesting person on every level, especially intellectually (engaging thought-provoking) and emotionally (clever, humorous, empathetic).

(Not hitting on you. I'm happily engaged. You have traits I admire in a friend or mentor and hope to continue to develop throughout my lifetime)

I was thinking about this video today after a rough morning at work so I looked it up on my break...This describes exactly how I've felt for the past few months and I spend a great deal of time most days reminding myself that this is a phase, this is an investment in my future, that it is temporary and eventually things will get better. Thanks, John, for making this video :)

John and Hank teach me more about life than any of my University classes will ever teach me.

I have an outline to do for a research paper right now! And I've been watching vlogbrothers and Crash Course for six hours. Crap.

All the comments are like 4-9 years ago and I feel like I've chanced upon an isolated city which had people moving around and talking before and now it's empty...someone join me here!!

I owe Ilene a lot because Looking For Alaska is one of my favorite books. Not only did it kill a lot of my time, but also did it kill a ton of my immaturity. A watershed between who I was and who I am. Thank you Ilene Cooper, and Thank you John.

Been playing this on repeat in the background all day to give me the strength to keep going making these costumes for a documentary that films next week. Being responsible for things is HARD, this video is so assuring :)
