More LATS on Lat Pulldowns!! Direct Lat Stimulation Lat Pulldowns with Direct Partner Tension

More Lats & Bigger Back Muscles!! Here I’m doing partner assisted direct lat stimulation with NFL pro Elijah Wilkinson. Elijah was recovering from finger surgery so we couldn’t load his fingers with too much total load (fat grips felt more comfortable).
So to get more back & lat activation out of slightly lighter loads we applied direct lat stimulation by pressing against his arms directly below the elbow. However, this is a great method to use for any athlete or bodybuilder looking for more lats & back growth. Here’s why.
Besides applying tension on the concentric I’m also applying more on the negative phase thus overloading the eccentric. This represents a form of direct tension as the additional load is placed directly onto the upper back & lats rather than indirectly through the arms.
Some of the old Nautilus variable resistance machines from the 70’s developed by Arthur Jones. (still considered by many to be the gold standard of strength equipment) had several pieces with elbow pads for the lifter to perform rows & lat pulldowns as a means of directly targeting upper back & lats.
Most rows & lat pulldowns involve indirect tension as we use the grip, biceps, & arms to get to the upper back & lats. Oftentimes the muscles of the grip & arms tend to give out before the larger muscles of the upper back on rows & pulldowns. With the direct tension method, we bypass the arms to directly target the upper back.
