He was full of jealousy over the baby sister, and felt left out and forgotten.
His mom started a “new” family with a man that wasn’t his dad and the beautiful baby was now center stage. He knew what he was doing.
He waited for his stepdad to be out of town.
He couldn’t contain his rage and no doubt he had been planning to kill her.
He was never actually going to kill himself.
This was a possessive jealous boy with blind rage. So sad & cruel.

I really believe he felt jealous of sharing his mother with a new sibling on top of a new “dad” and he killed his mother because she was “willing” to have a new family. Along with devoting a lot of time to the new baby and family, he may have felt unwanted and unimportant! Therefore he killed his mother the originator for all the changes and his problems!
