2-Year-Old Locked Inside Daycare, Mom Was 15 Minutes Late

A mother was distraught when she showed up to her child’s daycare a few minutes late to find that her 2-year-old had been locked inside the facility - alone! Stephanie Martinez, who was just 15 minutes late picking up her daughter, understandably freaked out. She called 911 for help, and the operator was shocked at the situation she described. The toddler had to push a chair to the door to stand on, in order to call out to her mother. Stephanie watched helplessly as she called out “Mommy!”

She seems pretty calm for being left alone at two years old. She’s a brave little girl.

The level of negligence and incompetence displayed by this daycare is unacceptable.

My mom had a seizure while driving to pick me and my siblings up in elementary. We were the last kids, just standing outside waiting, and my old kindergarten teacher allowed us back into the room. She stayed there with us for a good 3-4 hours until my dad could get off work, get my mom, and then get us. She even got us snacks and turned on the old TV. This is inexcusable

The daycare center needs to be held accountable for this, this isn’t something you can just slap on a “The safety of our children is our top priority” and call it a day. Clearly it isn’t their top priority. I can only imagine how much the mom wished she could just unlock the door to let her child out, but of course she couldn’t do that without the keys.

As someone who worked in childcare for 5 years there’s been times when parents have been late, but I would never leave a child. The caretakers should be arrested for child endangerment

There is no way you can forget about a child before locking up a daycare. I’m an elementary school teacher and I’ve worked in numerous daycares. Even a quiet kid doesn’t go unnoticed in proper care.

You know it's bad when even the 911 operator is stunned

Child endangerment requires more than just an apology to make things right. I'm surprised the daycare didn't get into more trouble.

I've worked at multiple Day Cares and if the mother is late, they charge them and I couldn't leave until that last child was picked up. This is really unacceptable

If I am the mom of that little girl, I will definitely sue them. That's so inhumane!!! That shouldn't happen at all!

”Retrained on child supervision”… leaving a two-year old alone doesn’t require training it requires COMMON SENSE.

She was so smart to get the chair so that she could see out the window and her mom could see her. She didn't cry. She wasn't upset. She was just like here I am. But if I was her mom I will be crying hysterically as well.

The person that locked her needs to be fired immediately. The mother need to press Charges against the day care and the person. This is a crime. I can’t imagine how they treat her and other kids inside 😳😡💔

Mom's understandably upset but she's keeping it together! Big stones on her.

No... you don’t have to “Re-train” all of them. Every one knows that’s wrong. You don’t need new training. Just fire the people that did it. It’s not the entire staffs fault.

I work at a daycare and literally cannot fathom how this would happen. You have to clean the classroom at the end of the night so they definitely should have known she was still in there. Our last one or two kids always come up front to wait for their parents in the office with us. We also have to keep a record of signing in, out, or transferring classrooms with name-to-face checks as we do so. Extreme negligence on their part
