Wukong also (in my opinion) is nowhere near the craziest part of journey to the west. One of the wildest parts for me is the kingdom of women where pigsy and Tripitaka drink from a special river and get pregnant for a bit. And then a little after that Tripitaka almost gets married to the empress of said kingdom, then shortly after THAT, he’s kidnapped by a scorpion demoness who is defeated by a giant rooster.

The weird part that apart from Odyssey to the West, Wukong appeared in dozens of games, but always as himself, not an adaptation or inspiration. He's in all MOBA games and he's there as straight up himself. "God of videogames"😅

Wukong is so batshit insane it almost feels like his whole story was the very first shonen anime. Guy can make every single one of his hairs turn into equally strong clones of himself, he's like 300 times immortal, and casually decided to fight Buddha because he thought he could one day

And for anyone who doesn't know, the Japanese translation of Journey to the West calls Wukong Goku, which is where the name and a lot of the inspiration for Goku comes from.

For anyone interested in Journey to the West but is not that keen on reading the equivalent of 5 bibles and then some (nah), may I suggest the famous series on the titular books from Overly Sarcastic Production; The pace is fast, a lot of snark and it's all hand drawn by Red. It's genuinely a great watch even if you're not interested in the works.

I grew up watching an english dub of a 70s tv show from japan called monkey magic which is based on journey to the west and it is by far the best thing ive ever seen. The opening theme will be stuck in my head for the rest of time.
