Some clarification on the lore to better understand the intro battle: Sun Wukong's biggest weakness, is the Golden Headband he wears on his head. That headband is enchanted and he cannot remove it. The headband shrinks whenever the secret mantra is recited, and it causes him terrible pain. That's how the powerless human monk Tang Sanzang kept him under control. Whenever he misbehaves, the monk recites the mantra and Sun Wukong would be rolling in pain.

During the intro, when he was flying as a bird, we can see that the Golden Headband is suddenly activated. That's why he was holding his head because it was crushing his skull. I guess we will find out who recited the mantra later in the game, to find out who caused his demise. If the headband wasn't activated, there's no way Erlang Shen could've defeated him.

for those who dont know, Sun WuKong had 72 transformations and bunch of abilities. many might think that it ripped off from anime abilities but it's actually the other way round because Journey To The West was released long ago

“Labor of love” is the best way to describe this game, every monster’s text is truly based on the story from ancient Chinese text, hell they even have different Chinese dialect for different monsters based on their original region…. The love is showing in so many details it’s mind blowing.

The only Context you will ever need, from an Asian man growing up watching all the films and have read all the novels about Sun Wukong :

This game happens after the events in the novel Journey To The West - a Chinese novel written in the 16th Century. In the novel, Wukong was a monkey born from a magical stone. At the beginning of the Universe, Nuwa ( the Goddess of Creation ) used her power to create all lives in the Universe, the excess energy from that event takes the form of 5 stones ( Wukong was born from 1 of those 5 stones ). Think of it like the Infinity Stones - enormous cosmic power. These 5 stones are then scattered among the Realms, one of them lands on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits. After thousands of years absorbing energy of the Heaven and the Earth, the stone cracked, giving birth to a magical monkey - Sun Wukong.

He was incredibly strong and smart from birth, and was named the Monkey King by all the monkeys in the Mountain. But, he still could not defeat aging and death. So he roams the land, seeking a master to learn the secret of immortality. After a long time practicing Taoism magics, and had achieved immortality, he returns to his mountain and named himself The Great Sage equals to Heaven. His playful and cocky nature doesn't sit well with the Celestial Court ( led by the Jade Emperor ), so between them, there was a beef. Fearing that Wukong would cause destruction, the Jade Emperor offered him a job in Heaven. During this time, he wanders around 33 levels of the Heavenly Palace, achieved 7 more layers of immortality ( by eating A WHOLE ASS GARDEN of immortality peaches, drinking Wine of Immortality, eating gourds of ). He even goes as far as going to Hell, bullying the God of Death, and erases his name out of the Book of Death, granting him another layer of immortality. Wukong is technically a force of the Universe, and now he can't die due to 7 layers of immortality. These acts made the Jade Emperor furious.

Then, the Jade Emperor ordered the Celestial Court to sent 100.000 heavenly soldiers ( including Erlang Shen and the Four Heavenly Kings in the video above ) upon him, Sun Wukong defeated them all. He destroys the whole Heavenly Palace and threaten the life of the Jade Emperor. In a panic, the Jade Emperor had to ask the All Mighty Buddha to intervene. Buddha defeated Wukong, and trapped him under a mountain for 500 years to teach him a lesson. After leaving, Buddha said that in order to repent for his sins, Wukong must embark on a Journey.

His mission was to escort a monk named Tang Sanzang from the East ( China ) to the West Heaven ( India ) to acquire the Scriptures of Buddha. Guanyin ( the right hand of Buddha ) gave Tang Sanzang the Golden Headband to keep Wukong in check ( because Tang Sanzang was only a mere weakling mortal ). By chanting the right words, the Headband will tighten around Wukong's forehead, giving him excruciating headache ( that's what happened in the video - maybe someone was reading the chant when Wukong turns into a bird - could be Buddha or Guanyin, i don't know ). After 17 YEARS of walking ON FOOT, defeating hundreds of monsters, they reached the West Heaven and acquired the Scriptures of Buddha. The party, including Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Pigsy and Sandy - were all given Buddhahood for their achievements. Sun Wukong was named The Victorious Fighting Buddha. All the events in this game happen after that.

I hope this would give Western audience more insights, and hopefully, more love for the beautiful story of Journey To The West. I highly suggest you all watch the film adaptations ( the most well-loved in Asia was the 1986 adaptation, the CGI is bad, but the story is beautiful. It is a long and profound story of the Journey, teaching us about love, compassion, and humanity, guiding us all on the Journey to achieve godhood ).

That Erlang in the beginning is a famous demi-god in Chinese mythology, his mother was the Jade Emperor’s sister and his father was a mortal, Yang Tianyou. His mortal name is Yang Jian and Erlang-Shen is his title among the gods.

With his talent, Erlang became powerful above most gods, however his mother was punished and sealed under a mountain for uniting with a lowly mortal. He is known for saving his mother by cleaving the entire mountain open with a great axe (the one we saw in the game) and fought off everyone who stood in his way. After that, he overcame countless tasks and challenges and earned a rightful place in Tianting (The Celestial Court), as the three-eye warrior and guardian of heaven at his uncle, the Jade Emperor’s side.

Also, he keeps a hound called Xiaotian (meaning Howling at the Sky).

Sun Wukong always make fun of him, calling him nephew because Wukong is “equal of heaven”, and Yang Jian usually don’t give a Fxxk.

They removed the best part of this stream, a roughly two hour period that occurred in the first 15 minutes of this video where Asmon had a panic attack because the game wouldn't work and he was faced with the real final boss: performing a BIOS update.

I love how lore accurate they made it. Wukong’s personality, trapping him in rock, the gods threatening to destroy his home and ppl. Journey to the West is a classic and (edit) the abridged versions are a quick read.

The year is 2024, it's very rare to see a game made for gamers.

Erlang is not related to wukong by blood. Wukong refers to him as brother because erlang was the only one who could match his fighting prowess among the celestial court.

After wukong had bested all 100 000 heavenly soldiers, the four celestial kings, ju-ling shen (the big guy in the back), and the third prince nezha, the jade emperor was in distress and didnt know who could stop wukong and subdue him so he could face judgement in heaven. The bodhissatva Guanyin (the one who the black bear referred to as master) stepped in and informed the celestial court that Erlang could best wukong in combat. They fought and were on par with each other but the the supreme heavenly lord of dao (creator of many of the celestial taiyi pills you find throughout the stages) intervened as they were fighting and hit wukong in the head with an elemental ring (this is not wukong's headband shown in the game) and thus wukong was defeated and brought to the celestial court by erlang to be executed. This is why Erlang refers to wukong as "someone he has bested before" (even though it wasnt really a fair fight in a way)

Wukong, not Goku, is from a Chinese novel called 西游记(meaning journey to the west/India). This novel come to Japan and they translate Wukong to Goku in Japanese. Some western ppl even thought Wukong is a copy of Goku, it's so ridiculous!😂😂

After I learned about "Journey to the West, " I really came to appreciate the story. It's full of philosophy and satire. The monk Tang Sanzang is on a quest to get sacred scriptures from the West, and Wukong is there to help him. They face 81 trials along the way, each one involving different Yaoguai. What's ironic is that most of these Yaoguai are actually pets of heavenly beings, let loose because of poor management in Heaven. These Yaoguai have powerful backers, so whenever Wukong tries to defeat them, their divine masters show up to save them. On the other hand, Yaoguai without any connections or background just die with no one coming to their rescue.

I love reading that this game is not only blowing up for gameplay but because of historical accuracy to real life references as well as the original works. Would love to see someone go through and make a list of such references in detail

I live in Thailand. There are literally temples built to Sun Wukong, we have a wooden statue of him in our house, he is not only a mythological figure, but a philosophical, and even religious one.

The fact that this game holds him with respect and regard while focusing on story opposed to all of the crap that western games focus on is absolutely blowing my mind.

You would NEVER see a game like this made by a Western studio, ever. Never ever. Not with so much respect and admiration.

The animations in this are so damn clean. Insanely rare to see a progressive walk into sprint animation that isn't just a switch transition from slow to fast. Those little details kill it for me.

In fact the character archetype of the Monkey King comes from an even older Chinese legend; in ancient China there were two rivers that ran into the sea, one of which was the Huai River. Many of the Monkey King's archetypes, abilities, and stories originated from the water god of the Huai Woe, Wu Zhi Qi. Wu Zhi Qi is a water monster in Chinese mythology. He is ape-like in shape, with a collapsed nose, convex forehead, white head and green body, and fiery eyes. His head and neck were up to 100 feet long, and his strength exceeded that of nine elephants. He often made waves in the Huai River, endangering the people. When Dayu was ruling the water, Wu Zhi Qi, in order to prevent him from controlling the floods, led more than 100, 000 mountain spirits and water monsters to fight against King Yu in Huaiyuan, so the floods in the Huai and Eddy water systems could never be solved. Just when Yu was at a loss for what to do, the god Yinglong descended to the earth and pressed Wu Zhiqi under the Turtle Mountain, assisting Yu to successfully manage the flooding, and only then did the Huai River flow calmly into the East China Sea. He was later appropriated by Wu Cheng En into Journey to the West and became the popular Sun Wukong, the Great Sage of Qi Tian Da Sheng who wreaked havoc in the Heavenly Palace.

A rating of 9-9.5 is indeed a very high evaluation, which means that someone who lacks understanding of Chinese culture can still enjoy this game. However, for players who are knowledgeable about Chinese culture, this game is definitely a 10/10, because it is filled with numerous details that are REALLY Chinese. Almost every detail you see and hear has undergone rigorous research, which means that a Chinese player may acquire 10 times more information during the gameplay than a non-Chinese player. The buildings, sculptures, and items in the game are not fictional but are based on real world buildings, sculptures, and cultural relics. For example, in every scene of meditation, there is an item resembling a cup, which is called a "Boshan Incense Burner." It is a type of incense burner cast using the lost-wax casting method and was popular in China over 2, 000 years ago. Many Boshan Incense Burners of different shapes are now collected in Chinese museums. Another example is the headless man's song in Chapter 2, which is a type of ballad from central and western China called Qin Qiang which is itself a national intangible cultural heritage.
