In this video, Keith Barker covers a few different methods to reduce the risk of an online brute-force attack against your Cisco router. He’ll also discuss various approaches to slowing down one of these “dictionary” attacks in case one does occur.
Putting the brakes on a brute force attack is critical to ensuring it doesn’t succeed. A core requirement for an effective hacking effort of this kind is the speed at which the black hat can attempt logins. If you can slow that down, you’ve gone a long way toward warding it off.
One of the approaches that you can use is to set a delay between login attempts, meaning a hacker can’t hit your server as rapidly as he would otherwise. You can also limit the maximum number of failed attempts before an account is locked. When this is coupled with effective password policies for your organization, it can be very successful at increasing your overall network security.
