In this video, Tim Warner covers Server Manager in Windows Server 2012. If you know Server Manager from previous versions of Windows Server, you know it's been underwhelming. Always a slow and clunky application, you can look forward to a fundamentally different app in Windows Server 2012.

Server Manager — it's always been slow, it's always been clunky, and it's used the Microsoft Management Console that's been around for years. But with Windows Server 2012, Microsoft went a different direction with Server Manager — a decidedly not-slow and not-clunky direction.

It's now a completely new application that's moved away from MMC and instead toward a PowerShell host application architecture. Server Manager now features enterprise-wide server groups, and thanks to VDI and virtualization, connections to physical or virtual machines don't have a distinction. Your favorite admin tools haven't gone anywhere — if anything, they're easier to access.

Plus, Server Manager is included in Windows 8 RSAT for those of you who like to access your server tools from your admin workstation. Watch how to access, work within, and configure Server Manager from the GUI, command prompt, or PowerShell environment.

A tablet PC interface on a server. Real smart Microsoft. I just love the Windows 1.0 look and the putrid colors. Sorry, I'll stay with 2008R2 as long as I can.
