MicroNugget: How to Configure Policy-Based Routing on Cisco Routers

In this video, Jeremy Cioara covers how to implement policy-based routing on a Cisco router. This gives you complete control over what the router is doing. You can automate the router to behave in virtually any way you’d like, even down to allowing variations based on the time of day.

It might not be too far of a statement to say that policy-based routing (PBR) revolutionizes one of the main pillars of how information technology is managed. With PBR, you can manage every aspect of how your router behaves, from throttling speeds down at certain times of the day to adjusting where traffic is directed based on its device of origin. This is one of those areas where it almost feels like IT crosses into developer territory and is about as close to programming as Cisco gets. The actual mechanism is based on a series of “if-then” statements, so if a rule can fit within that structure, you can implement it.

Jeremy, you're the best. Plain, simple and to the point. I spent 4 hrs trying to clear up my confusion listening to everybody else try to explain PBR, and its application. Your message managed to penetrate that thick and protruding forehead of mine. Kudos.

What happens if one ISP connected on S0/0 goes down. All the traffic goes to other ISP or do we need to manually change it?

Thanks All!

If I give only following statement will it works
# match ip address 30
#set Interface gi0/3

Provided I don't have Pbr configured on router and ACL 30 have one subnet.

Is it necessary to add another sequence no for all match if I already have default route and I want to use default route also

Thanks
