Euro NCAP Frontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the Full Width test, 100% of the width of the car impacts a rigid barrier at 50 Km/h. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 32 km/h into a rigid pole.

For all the confused out there, the Punto automatically gets 0 stars under the 2017 rating regime because it has no active safety features as standard (besides mandatory ones like ESC). If it had seat belt reminders on all seats it might have been able to get 2 stars, and if it also had curtain air bags and a speed limiter function it would likely have gotten 3 stars. 5 stars requires a healthy amount of active safety features these days, simply being a strong car doesn't cut it.

The most irritating thing is: the 2005 model had side airbags while on the newest models it was an optional.

Side airbags man! The rest of it looks just fine

No AEB, even as an option, automatically excludes it from 4 or 5 stars. Then no side-airbags (in 2017..!) for certain markets meant zero stars.

Worth noting that in markets such as the UK, the extra airbags are standard, but for markets such as Italy, they are an optional extra.

Also worth noting that the same chassis was awarded 5 stars in 2005. But the tests have become tougher and the car can still be bought new 12 years later.

2005 : 5stars, 2017 : 0 stars! This is a 12 years old platform already.. By the way a very nice car for everyday use..

"The passenger compartment of the Punto remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the
knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger but structures in the dashboard were thought to present a risk of injury to occupants
of different sizes and to those sat in different positions. Protection of the passenger's chest was rated as marginal, based on dummy
readings of compression. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of the chest of the rear passenger was weak, and that of the neck
was marginal. Protection of the driver was good or adequate for all critical body regions. In the side barrier test, chest protection was
rated as marginal, based on rib compressions. A side pole test was not performed as the Punto does not have a standard-fit head
protecting airbag. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated poor whiplash protection in the event of a rear-end collision.
A geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated marginal whiplash protection."

The structure is solid, it's just missing basic things like side and curtain airbags in the cheaper trim levels. If you want a safe second hand Punto make sure you get one that has those things and also ESC, which you can check if it has an ASR button above the radio.

In case of Punto 0 rating,

. It was a zero per cent rating in the ‘Safety Assist’ category that sealed its fate as a zero star car - other than a seatbelt reminder, it doesn’t have much in the way of the preventative tech we’ve become accustomed to in modern cars.

Responding to the result, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles UK said:

“Safety is of the utmost importance to the FCA group. When Punto was launched 12 years ago, it was the first 5 star Euro NCAP car in its class. The importance of safety to the FCA group is demonstrated by the number of new models achieving 5 stars, for example Alfa Romeo Giulia, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Jeep Compass.”

And it did keep everyone safe inside, just Google and see how Fiat became lifesaver for many in India, practically!

0 stars? It looks safer than the dacia duster

As an engineer student i find this test a success for what it can be observed, the front absorbed most of the impact while the habit remained rather intact and rigid, the side test also looked good i can see the car has a lot of "meat" to absorb sever impacts and enough bulk to withstand them, so why did it score a zero?! well mafia in the car industry is a common thing and this looks like straight up extortion. "Donate more money to the foundation "x" or we will demote your vehicle." also why does this get a zero and a smart for2 does not?

Se questa é 0 stelle, la panda 1 serie con tanto di protezione del santo attaccato sul cruscotto é illegale

Don't know if sensors recorded some critical damage, but the shell of this car looks rock solid. I didn't notice almost any damage inside as well. Would like to see info on dummy's "injuries".

Update. There is info below in the comments. It says overall protection is quite ok.

I hate Fiats, but honestly it looks pretty safe... It's a 13 year old car!

The only reason to show 0 stars: "buy new shit!"
Just advertisement for new cars. Even not so fair, cause this car is very safe.

Results are only related to the lowest safety equipment levels. Structural vehicle shows a very high resistance to the impacts.
I may say that I crushed a Fiat Punto against a Renault and my Fiat left the place by itself instead the Renault on a crane truck.

I do not have exact knowledge about requirements, but it seems chassis are rigid enough and I do not see any fatal failures there, I do not get this result
NCAP wake up.

Crash this 0 star rating Punto into that 5 star rating Toyota Yaris at 64 km/h, and let's see who ends up being better. I put all my money on the Fiat. The Yaris already had very serious structural problems on 64 km/h, the A pillar bent severely, the whole floor bent, I bet there was already intrusion in the foot well, etc. That means in a slightly faster crash or in a crash against a more stiff structure, or a heavier car, it will get crushed like a tin can that it is, and then all the safety features that are active and that boost the rating won't help you one bit. This Fiat on the other hand remains extremely stiff and structurally stable, and could take a crash at a much higher speed.
