If you want to build hamstrings effectively and employ the most effective hamstring workout possible, including a leg curl is a good idea for maximum development. One of the 3 hamstring heads doesn't cross the hip joint and so you need a knee flexion exercise for that, whether it's a lying leg curl, standing leg curl or seated leg curl. Here are 3 mistakes to avoid on leg curls during your leg workouts. The first error on this leg exercise is positioning the pad too high, which cuts down the range of motion. The second is not controlling the negative. If you want to build bigger legs (or any muscle in general) make sure to lower the weight under control. The last mistake is excessive momentum which can reduce hamstrings tension and increase injury risk. ADDITIONAL NOTES:

You can certainly still build a solid pair of hammies without doing leg curls at all, but for maximum hypertrophy it’s probably a good idea.⁣ The biceps femorus short head doesn’t cross the hip joint (unlike the other 3 heads of the hamstring) and so to effectively train it you’ll need a knee flexion based exercise.⁣ If you’re only doing hip hinge movements then you’re probably missing out on some growth.⁣

Do you include leg curls in your plan and if so do you prefer the lying, seated or standing variation?⁣

It does look like the seated version is ideal since flexing the hips allows you to train the hamstrings in their lengthened positioned and maximize overall mechanical tension, but personally I’ve always felt better on a lying leg curl for whatever reason.⁣

One of the biggest and simplest changes I've ever learned is slowing down the eccentric motion. It makes you feel a lot more burn, and I personally feel more badass being in control of the weight.

The laying leg curl for me I feel in my calf more than hamstring. The seated leg curl I feel way more in the hamstring & have much more control

I like how you said excessive momentum. One of the mistakes I used to make was always keeping to being to strict on exercise form. It's important to get that stretch reflex in the muscle. Also cheating a little on certain exercises, like biceps curls, to get a few extra reps at the end really helps with progressive overload.

I like that he says to control it, but one thing I always do is pause at the top, at least for a second or two.
