CNET's Brian Cooley offers up his list of the top five Mustangs of all time, listed by magnitude of legacy.

I am okay with this list except he missed one...2005-2014's.

These cars, more then anything, brought back 'retro' and 'muscular' back to pony cars. Plus, it helped cause both the Camaro and the Challenger to come back to life. Now that's a legacy.

1) 1967/68 Shelby GT500 - Put Ford and Mustang on the map of top performers.
2) 03/04 Terminator Cobra - Ended the competition, started modern muscle car wars, incredible tech for its time.
3) 1969/70 Mach 1, Boss 302/429 - Class, looks, performance, did I mention looks? Had to add all in that style.
4) 1964 1/2 Mustang - The first Mustang, sold more than any other car in history at that time and time after.
5) 12/13 Boss 302 - Roadrunner engine with separate development team. Granddad of modern GT350.
6) 1971 Boss 351 - Fastest car in the first Gen of Mustangs.Last car before Mustang went downhill.
7) 13 GT500 - Last true Shelby. Carroll Shelby dies in 2013. 5.8 SC block, insane power.
8) 1968 Mustang Bullitt - Highest auctioned Mustang ever. One of first Mustangs in Hollywood
9) 1993 Cobra R - SVT Development begins putting performance back into Mustangs
10) 2011 Mustang GT - Ford brings back the 5.0 as the standard V8 engine choice, 100 hp over previous 4.6

Great vid! I'm an outlier... I had and have always loved the 1971. It was low, solid, and one of the last that had the 351 engine. Still miss that car...

I've had a few mustangs in my life. The list goes 64.5 coupe 260 v8, 65 coupe 289, 79 cobra, 84 GT 302 4bbl, 87 GT 5.0.

In 1968 my parents were buying a new Ford LTD and there was a 1968 Ford Shelby KR on the showroom floor. It had power windows, other heavy options and an extended nose with different air scoops on the hood. Ford was putting a heavy influence on this model and the speculation is that’s the reason Carroll Shelby left Ford in 1969. He came back to Ford in time to build a 2005 Shelby at Shelby American and once again the badging is all Shelby.

I agree with the GT350 and Bullitt's movie car, but he completely omitted the 2008-2009 Bullitt Mustang, certainly the best looking Mustang ever (in Highland Green, of course). It also had the right balance of speed, handling, looks, and options (none). One will be my next car.

My fav mustangs are the 1964.5 and the 99-04 just based on the looks

I would have liked to see the Terminator Cobra on the list just because it killed the Camero for a while. It might just be my bias though because I own a 04 gt.
