It took a LOT for Tyrion to turn against his family. They pushed him to Dany's side. He tolerated every indignity, defended the indefensible, guided his nephew, guarded their family secrets. And that's just the tjp of the iceberg if you know some of the back story in the books. He finally had enough.

I met (Peter) Tyrion shortly after this episode as he was just walking his dog in the city (NYC). Totally surprised me bc I was focusing on the pup, and when I saw the owner, I was like, "omg 😮 sir that scene in the court made me tear up." He takes one look at me and goes, "Oh, that was supposed to be a COMEDIC scene" then laughed before sauntering off. Great dude.
