Hey everybody! Three updates! As mentioned in the video - I have some more detail. Charging is capped at 170kW DC for the base model Model Y. Power and torque is same as the entry-level Model 3 SR+, so 220kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The price of the car also went up after we filmed, it’s now $72, 300 before on-road costs. Thanks for your patience!

After seeing the Model Y for the first time at Tesla Brighton last week, I actually prefer the look of the Model Y to the Model 3 ... which I was not expecting.

I ordered the Model Y with 20" induction wheels and noticed the majority of YouTube reviewers from AU and the UK mentioning the ride quality as a significant issue. Just like in this review.

This week, I went for a test drive with the 19" standard and felt the ride quality was pretty good. I have a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid to compare and contrast, and it's not too far off, granted I only spend 20 minutes in the car!

I found that I actually really like 19" standard wheels in person on a white car and am quite pleased with the ride quality. I'm proceeding with the purchase.

My Model Y Long Range has 19" wheels, and the ride is SO much more comfortable than the one I took for a test drive with 20" wheels. The Dealer recommended to get it with 19" wheels for both comfort and range.

I have a model 3. I agree on the harsh ride, and I like firm suspension. In addition the steering lock is poor and the rear visibility is non existent. Otherwise it's a great car. Not just good, great.

Drove the car with the 19's yesterday and can report its a much nicer drive. It was really pleasant. I hate my Model 3 Performance on Sydney roads and think I might let it go for a Y. I'm waiting for the LR to upgrade that one but have ordered a SR with 19's to get by till then. Congrats on the little girl; we had one 4 months ago which is why we ordered the Y.

I've ordered my Model Y last week. This will be my first ever EV never even had hybrid. Went to the Tesla dealership in Richmond and drove the 19" Standard model and was blown away. Felt very similar to my mums car which is an BMW X4.

Thanks for a great review, Paul - you continue to set the standard for thoroughness, honesty and accuracy, and all with healthy dollops of good humour and personality. Ive been hanging-out for a Y for a while, but had to buy something ICE (Outback). Poor ride would be a deal-breaker for me. I'm pretty sure that when Sandy Munro did his thorough tear-down of the Y he mentioned that the chassis seemed to have fittings for an adaptive suspension, which would come close to making the car an exceptional machine. Like you, I think a HUD ought to be mandatory, and the stop-watching-the road to check your speed and other things is a serious flaw. I also think the car is not attractive, but I've seen uglier (like the first BMW X6, for example), but the interior is so very practical. When I'm ready to replace my Outback, this is one of the first vehicles I'll be looking at.

I received the 2023 Model Y and it comes with a comfort suspension at it is drastically better than the previous model

The fact that you have to keep not looking ahead and look at the infotainment system is a show stopper for me really

I ordered a Tesla Y but canceled it after a test drive in summer as we found it too hot with a glass roof with no cover. It definitely needs a heads up display as you continuously are taking your eyes off the road because everything is on the centre screen.

I like that you compare the ride / stiffness to a BMW M product ! ✅

Well said sir .

For my friends down under - as someone who bought the MYP over other ICE cars, the ride quality is not sublime for the price but what sets the car apart from other ICE or EV cars in the price range: supercharging, autopilot, performance (if you get the fast one) really set it apart.

I'd suggest checking the tyre pressure - one thing that caught out a lot of people in the uk was the initial model y's (including the press vehicles) came over from china with the tyre pressure at 50psi rather than the recommended 42

Love your honest reviews, Paul. From a design perspective I think Tesla should have differentiated the headlights and tail lights to make it look distinctly different from the Model 3. It’s hard not to say it’s anything other than a bloated Model 3. Nonetheless, it’ll sell hundreds of thousands of units because of its practicality. If there’s one thing Tesla are good at, it’s doing things differently and challenging the norm - the Saab of current day IMHO.

Based on how you critcised the hell out of no physical controls recently in other cars, then this 'one touch only screen does all' approach must drive you insane!

Such a deal breaker to me that they removed the radar systems. They work way better in bad weather, particularly for emergency braking or when you can't see the car in front under a very heavy fog. Cameras don't see through that, radar can.

The rear door locks ( and front locks) are power from the 12 volt battery not the 400 volt drive battery so it's unlikely to be and an unlocking problem even if the main drive battery is exhausted. Most of the other issues mentioned have been fixed by over the air updates some time ago.

Great review, Paul. Subjectively speaking, it's a funky looking car, but the lack of head-up-display is a deal-breaker for me. Disappointing about the ride too, especially since it's not a performance-oriented model.
