Should you buy this electric SUV? (Tesla Model Y 2022 review)

The Tesla Model Y has arrived in Australia. Is this the best EV on the market for families? At $72,300, it’s already had a price increase for the 2022 Model Y RWD that we are testing today.

Did you order a Model Y before the price rise? Around 7000 Australians ordered on day 1 for this EV that competes with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, BMW iX3 and Mercedes EQA/EQC. We’re testing the 2022 Tesla Model Y Standard Range RWD with 220kW of power and a 60kWh battery for 455km range (claimed).

Chasing Cars does not accept advertising from car manufacturers, and we’re powered by Budget Direct - so this is an independent, honest review of the Tesla Model Y.

13:55 I'm very glad to see you guys covered this. That went into my own decision making process on my Model 3. Because you can charge to 100% regularly, the range difference between the RWD and higher specs is not relevant. The main factor to fork out the extra cash for the Long Range or Performance on either the 3 or Y should be performance.

Great honest video, I'm glad you tested the most common model that people here will order.

Another top review guys. That was one of your best deliveries.
Thoroughly enjoyable and informative. 👍

The production cars we'll be getting from Shanghai factory, will have revised suspension. Also, to make the ride better, you can always swap the wheels for the 18" from Model 3. In fact, that's the first thing I'd do.

So I’m assuming the bigger wheels on RWD (which I think looks better) would make the ride even worse? Anyways, Great and fair review! I love the style of your videos as well.

I think cooling on the seats would be great for Australia and not heating but if i lived in a colder climate the reverse would be true . I guess they will fit what would be the most popular option .

Never mind families. I'm physically disabled and 73 years old. I had a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S to take my "walker", but struggled to get out of it, even with the suspension on "lift". I sent it back to Porsche and now have a Tesla Model Y long range. It's taller and easier to exit and with an even bigger boot. It's ideal for geriatrics too.

Went for a test drive, came back to see who stressed on the rough suspension, well done Tom! It is still pretty rough! The sales team told me 2023 they have improved the suspension then I just couldn't imagine what a 2022 model would have felt like..

Sir your comments on cost and speed of supercharging are spot on !

It’s basically free !
(Less $ than you might toss a waiter a tip after eating ! )

Hi Tom,
I think you should highlight a key difference ( might not matter for all) is the RWD between Model 3 &Y.
RDW Model Y will have the premium audio system; while RWD Model 3 will have partial premium audio system.
:)

Great, balanced review, Tom. Thank you. I’ll join the queue as the Model Y is ideal for my needs. I’ll seek the advice of an aftermarket suspension company once I’ve driven it a bit.

At the risk of pissing off the fan boys and girls, my new Sorento is bigger, more seats and the range is double in diesel. At $15, 000 less and the kilometres I drive each year, it would take 12 years to pay off the difference in fuel alone. If you have the spare cash, go for it. For my family it will be a few more years until the EV benefit makes sense.

Great review Tom as always. One observation though, it’ll be great to film what ever you’re talking about as you talk about it, for example if you’re talking about the rear window visibility, throw in a clip where you actually show us what you mean etc.

Lacks basic features like HUD, instrument cluster etc. Can't look constantly away from the road to check speed. It is far from ideal especially where you need to change your speed in every kilometer.

Just ordered one the other day with estimated Feb-May 2023 delivery...can't wait

The boot is stupid huge. If you need space, there is no other option. If you have kids this is the one to buy.

Before I hit 50, I had bought so many the future of “____” products. Turned out, by the time the future came, I need the genuine future products. And look for speed from the side, I have to say my driving is not good enough for this car with a smile too. Very informative review though.

Great on Explaining the Battery, range and charging where other reviewers don't 👍

Will be every helpful foe people didn't have any idea of those 👌

"no matter what" or until they rise the price.
Drove model 3. Glass roof not only heating up cabin, but make it more noisy. Controlling everything and air vents through the screen is annoying. Harsh suspension.

Hi Tom,

Thank you for another fantastic review. I was wondering whether you guys have tested the new ‘comfort suspension’ that the model 2023 is supposed to have? Im considering this car (after waiting for 12 months to receive a NX 350h AWD f-sports) but the suspension is my main concern (having a little 2 year old to take with us!)
Thanks again keep up the good work:)
