Recently injured myself badly at work in my right hip/glute, at first the pain was crazy all over the side of my hip and deep in my glute but the doctors diagnosed me with "Myositis" and that caused my workers comp insurance to get denied. Wasn't able to walk for over a month and now that the pain has died down using your videos I think I am able to figure out I either have Bursitis or elongated piriformis or both. Thanks for these videos, I don't have any money or insurance for a doctor or a P.T so im trying my best to rehab myself using as much knowledge as I can from the internet.

I watched a video recently that most people are misdiagnosed with piriformis syndrome and it included a few stretches to shrink that muscle instead of stretch it out. Best thing I’ve ever done, it helped immediately.

This was amazing and refreshing information. I always wondered why my PT experience never helped but made things worse when I had a knee issue. I had to figure my self out, self assessment, paying attention to small wins, and do biofeedback to heal. The scary part was I almost got to a point of acceptance of having chronic pain.

No WONDER my sciatica would explode after every PT visit. She had me doing all of those stretches.

Been warned by a surgeon to greatly limit ANY exercises suggested by anyone regardless of them being a surgeon or physical therapist. Piraformis wad mentioned at that time so you are right on. Here's hoping you have an alternative to regular exercise routine.

I've been thinking the same thing the last month and a half that I've been going to pt what you are saying in this video confirms it for me.thank you for what you do .. I have to rethink what I'm doing cause it's not working at pt.they throw all these exercises I guess to see which one works, I've been asking them for a more thorough exam and precise treatment

I agree. I unfortunately went back to P/T visits. And they did give me a series of 5 exercises. And you are right. made me worse. so I have discontinued

I’m an exercise instructor with what I think is piriformis pain. I also have anterior rotation of my pelvis on the same side. I’ve found doing Myofascial exercises to address the rotation gives me the “yummy “ in that the butt pain goes away. This then leads me to assess movements I do in my exercise class that help or worsen and I’m going from there.
Again I thank you for your experience and expertise!

Dr Charlie, thank you for what you do. I have a question. I am 62 and have started playing pickleball. According to your self diagnosis screen and my PT daughter I have pain in the middle of the hip. I have periformis Syndrome. How can I build my glutes and not stretch my Pereformis muscle? I probably also have arthritis. I broke my back November 2020 and had surgery. Fuse from T12 to L 4. Other than some stiffness I have no pain in my back. Any suggestions? Thank you!

The way pt is billed, there’s a unique charge for every exercise provided. So that does encourage lots of exercises. As a cash patient I find the way pt is billed to be fully ridiculous.

When you say you shouldn’t stretch your periformis muscle, does this apply for any part of the body, example tight calves or hamstrings or just for people who have sciatica/Periformis syndrome?

Hello, Dr. Charlie Johnson. Does middle split lengthen the piriformis muscle? Can I do your exercises of shortening the piriformis and at the same time, middle splits?

Hi there. Some of the exercises that my son’s PT is saying that the exercises even if it is not doing immediate relief is the key to making the glutes stronger. So even if it is not doing anything, should we continue it in the faith of making it stronger in the future. But we need the immediate relief, they just said it’s a mix of hamstring and piriformis.

Piriformis causes much discomfort. I've been doing all these referred to in the video and the same with other issues and I go through so much pain "trying to do the right thing". And I still have pain in the butt. After this video what am I supposed to do now? Go through all these exercises one by one - say for a week - and then evaluate?

Ive been sitting for long periods and now i have piriformis. I just want it to go away, like why me? i have so many things stressing me, i don't really need all of this, its just adding into the stress i already have. Lord help me 😭😭😭😭😭

Can't the shotgun method be a good strategy? In other words, if you work on a good balance of strength, stretching, mobility in the whole body, the body will be able to stand the strains you put on it.

Work on the overall picture, not on the specific problem area.
