Why do we always want more stuff? Well, it tends to come down to discontentment- being generally discontent with what we have. But what would it look like if we didn't feel that way? Let's chat about why we tend to have an incessant desire for more and how to take control of that discontentment. When do we stop wanting more?

What helped me: “To enjoy life, you have to accept that there is emptiness and lack. You realize that nothing is missing apart from what you have decided to accept that it would be missing.” Jean-Luc Giribone

Great video!
Thankfully minimalism has helped me find a place of contentment with my things (or lack thereof). I find I desire very little in terms of possessions. I desire a clean & calm living environment. I desire time to relax, spend time with my loved ones and do activities I enjoy. I desire stimulating my brain through reading, watching motivational videos & learning new things. My values and goals are no longer connected to "stuff", and neither is my self-esteem.

I really enjoyed this video. I realized today while talking with my therapist that the reason I have a hard time with not wanting more is that I feel like I have a lack of control over my life and buying things gives me that illusion of control. The other reason your talked about today also struck a cord with me, particularly the unaligned expectations. I don’t know why specifically, but I always imagined that I’d have specific things by certain ages and that they haven’t happened the way I imagined has sent me down more spirals than I care to remember.

Great one Mia!! I'm trying my hardest to practice self control. I've got a perfume collection, and there's a never ending wishlist...if one is crossed off another is added. So I'm trying to take control of this never ending contentment of wanting the next one and my contentment never being filled. This video is greatly appreciated 🤗❤

The wishlist technique is so helpful! When I am feeling bored or just randomly discontent with my stuff, I sometimes end up on online shopping sites. I developed the habit a while ago of making wishlists when on those sites, and 90% of the time, I will look back on it and wonder what was going through my mind. What on earth was that ever made me desire those items!?

Some of my stuff was really outdated and not up to par. Other things were like superfluous excess. Once I started shedding off the excess I saw both the lack and the excess and both were out of whack. Ironic Bcuz seriously I was rolling along and some of my spices had expired 10 years ago and the bottles were totally hodgepodge and mismatched and yellowing etc. So I gave it a new makeover which meant buying a new set and new spices. Not that I’d worry if any spices were even a year expired. But I def think 10 years expired was a bit much. Lol. It just felt fresh and good. Part of me wants to “make do” too much and for way too long. Another part of me had been making a lot of foolish purchases left and right. Lol. I think for me idk if I’d call myself a minimalist per se. I am just glad to be doing all shopping with a lot more focus and clear intention and purpose...and patience. My main problem I think was that it was fun to “go hunting” and that was why I’d keep going and doing it so much. Or it was my “me time” from housework and chores etc and the daily grind. Like a break etc. I needed to find “fun” things or “breaks” that didn’t involve me getting into so many retail shenanigans. I still enjoy it (like rummaging at the thrift store), but now I go with a few specific things in mind and I try to stay focused more on directing my “hunt” toward those things and being a lot less random. “Cute” was an issue. So was “useful.” Or “unique.” And so on. But now I’m just more like will it fit in my one display and look good with the other stuff? And useful to who tho? There’s useful and quality items, but pointless if I don’t really need it or won’t use it or like toys...if I’ll just be bored with it in 3 days from now. Etc. Our whole modern society tho is often inundated with so much and also we have such easy access to so much and many times dirt cheap. It’s no wonder practically everyone struggles with things like this. I generally don’t care about the Jonses tho. Someone will always have something better than I have or more than I have. I shop for me and not just to try and “keep up” or be “good enough” for someone else. Def I think getting to know myself better helped a lot too. Before it was so all over the place Bcuz I didn’t really know myself well enough to buy for her with a lot of accuracy. Lol. You really do have to drop a lot of “shoulds” tho and get really honest with yourself (Aka drop the whole wishful fantasy person and just accept who you are right now “as is” and commit to living according to that).

you must decide to be content with what you have and not the latest and greatest. Its hard and makes you feel like its not good enough but, it is ok and will be fine, i promise!LOL. Try do do this with little things and then move to big stuff. If you must have it then buy it!!! but, take it back if you can and get tired of it soon. I find im not as in love with it when i have it a few days and can return it!!! Try it.

Thank you for starting out with abuse informed information. I think that's so important, talking about when discontent is necessary.

Love love love and.. absolute love it! 👏👏👏💖 Truly a great quality video, as always! Thank you Mia!! 💖🙏

I also love the Buddhist way of thinking and I truly try to act upon it, by amongst others not being so greedy and selfish (along with some other negative features). I try to find true peace in the simple moments and not acting out spontaneously shopping online when I'm really feeling anxious about something else. It's often a diversion, when one is shopping something spontaneously I think.

Again, a huge thank you Mia! 💖🙏🕊️🍂🍁🌟

I want to have more eyeshadow because of the beautiful color... Can't offered the high end and buy the cheap one but I feel its lacking and desire the expensive one again and try to buy again the cheap ones again.... The cycle all over again... Sadness...

I never feel content with my clothes, I keep buying new (often second hand) clothes but I always feel like there’s probably a better option out there. Bought a jumper, see my colleague wearing a nicer one. I then catch myself thinking “I’ll be happy when I have a jumper just as nice as that one”. But thus cycle doesn’t seem to end. Does this have to do with perfection or do you think it’s something else?!

It seems to me that less people than ever want more clothes. These days apart from a small amount of shopping addicts and hoarders more people than ever are becoming discontented with the amount of stuff they have and want to get rid of things. Therefore, the video seems outdated and difficult to relate to. Sorry.
