Welcome to the second lesson in my “Fastest Way To Get Faster” series. Back when we had Thomas Lang out to Drumeo, he showed me an exercise which consisted of 3 notes on the floor tom and 3 notes on the snare drum using single strokes. This inspired me to write this exercise which I call “The Buddy Bruiser” because it sounds like something Buddy Rich would play!

Play each exercise individually for 10 minutes, then play them in sequence for 10 minutes.

I love all the guys from drumeo 🥁 I have been a self taught drummer the past 20 years. Your videos really help.

Awesome little exercise to help me better articulate those runs that I always seem to slur! Nice and clear instructions that aren't too fast and not too slow where the video becomes banal and drags on. Will be sure to add this to the practice schedule! Thanks, Jared!

Just came across this one. I've been doing it only for about a year. Saw it done somewhere else. I get the pattern and have expanded it. In my routine at some point each drum becomes the home drum. The snare to 10" tom is harder than any other exchange (South to North and reverse). Also I've learned a circular pattern on 4 drums using triples, which requires thinking a little differently about how to repeat it. Also a triple to double to triple from floor tom to hi-ht. Also doing the Buddy Bruiser routine to include the hi-hat from the snare, which requires doing 2 sets of triples on the snare to make the transition to the hi-hat lead with the left hand. And when going back to the Buddy Bruiser flow adding and extra triple to continue the drill leading with the right hand to the floor tom. Or not adding a triple and north to the tom tom. Then...triples within triples.

I'm liken' the paradiddle speed routine. I've got the pattern down, but still workin' on the speed. These are both fun drills.

As someone that hasn't played a proper set since 2019, this definitely was informative.

I noticed too by doing these exercices the importance of having to toms in the right position ( I've done lesson #1 today mawi speed 100 bpm), so that is also going to help me to set up my gear properly

After this try the following.. Start on the Floor tom with just 2 strokes (left right), then continue on with 3 on each drum. This shift the 3 pattern along by 1 stroke. Feels and sounds different.

Next start with a single stroke on the floor tom (right), then to the snare with 3 and 3 and so on. This one sounds very cool.

As a final bit of fun with this, count 16th notes and play this. 3 across 4. Oh the fun that can be had :)

Nice lesson :D
After a few of these I found out, nearly everything sounds doped, if you're just going blazing fast with it^^

Also a good way with this is feeling the notes as 16ths or 32nds creating an over the bar feel

This lick by Buddy Rich has influenced so many of the top drummers today who play some variation of it: Neil Peart, Mike Mangini, Dennis Chambers, etc.

I learned this from Dennis Chambers a decade or so ago and I can do it ultra fast easily. Don't forget you can also do this in 5s and 7s not just 3s.
