On our farm when I get like this I usually go and move the cattle really early on a beautiful morning and take my time instead of rush to the next chore. I'm there before sunrise and this gives me time to watch the birds, spend time with the cattle and really look at the pasture and wildflowers coming through.

On failure - it is just part of the process. You have to love the process and that means you get knocks. Goals can be really damaging if they are linked to activity that you don't enjoy. I love farming and being with nature so I get back to that. If your business gets really busy and you become a manager then you might need to re-consider what you want. You have to enjoy the journey. If you play for big goals and never make it then it doesn't matter if you love the journey. If you don't enjoy the journey then you fail whether you reach your goal or not. Failure doesn't really exist - or perhaps only when you don't try doing something you love whether you reach your goals or not.

4. remember what you were doing b4 farming: no more living in a box in suburbia, crawling to work in a moving metal box to sit in a small box cubical. I'm surround by mountains and get to spend loads of time with my wife working together.

5. Avoid debt to non friends/family. Really tough one, but a can be a huge strain.

I was in the greenhouse biz for 25+ years.  I always went through a funk at the end of our busy season.  After the first 4-5 years I knew this was going to happen.  Identifying and realizing it is going to happen even during the successful years helped me put it into perspective.  My No. 1 is to realize I am mentally and physically fatigued.  My No. 2 is taking time for myself.  Even little things like getting a hair cut or going to the river helped my peace of mind.  No. 3  is planning the next season.  I made a list of things I had learned to do or not to do and adjusted my growing plan to allow for these changes made me feel more successful.  If we are lucky, there will always be another season to plan.

One thing I found really helped me personally last season was spending one hour each week doing a task that was in the 'important, but not urgent' category. I was getting way too bogged down with urgent things (eg harvest) but not doing things like fixing a broken lock on our shed. Doing those little things, even for only an hour a week, made a massive difference to my mental health.

I agree with Robert below but I have a Number 4, Sit back in a chair after a long day, look at what you accomplished with a cold, local microbrewery beer and literally chill out. Wow, what a

I have found a different approach to be the most effective tool. I find that when I try to make myself happy, I end up in an expanding spiral of self-gratification. For example, one vacation was good, but the next time it has to be bigger and better to get the same result. One beverage or food or treat was good, but the next one has to top the last one in order to snap me out of my blues. Instead, I find that when I give something to someone that requires sacrifice and discomfort on my part, I receive a renewal of peace. I don't mean going the extra mile for a customer, knowing that ultimately my pocketbook will benefit. I mean really doing something difficult for someone else in such a way that they cannot repay me. It doesn't have to be huge, but it does have to be sacrificial and not repayable. That's what lifts my burden in a real lasting way.

Just as you remove weeds out of your garden, remove the weeds out of your life so they can't poison your happiness. When you look back at where you came from and what you have achieved, then you must feel a lot of pride, such pride would help me to go through the low points in life.

its called "giving your brain a rest" I have experienced that even doing a Sudoku puzzle, staring at it and figuring this way and that to find a solution, then, for whatever reason I had to look away, and when I look back at the puzzle, there is a bit of solution that for some reason, I couldn't see. The brain was tired *of that one thing*. Its amazing what energy you have built up when you take a rest.

In my first year and for the first time woke up in a funk. The grind this time of year is real and I'm exhausted. Thanks for this video. Watched it last year when it didn't really apply but now I'm thankful for it and your inspiration. I feel better already!

I posted a video today saying even if nothing grew that I would have learned about why it didn't work. Fortunately my hydroponic garden did better than i though it would have, but room to improve them.
although sometimes when they do grow well I may not have a clue why, but that's a microgreen joke!
when I'm gardening I'm in a Zen connection with Mother earth and when I'm not it can get a bit lonely... if only cats could talk!
great topic

I am also self employed and always remind myself that I am only human and can only do so much in a day. WHen I feel overwhelmed I just go for a walk down the field and watch the bees as they endlessly come and go from the hives and realise that I don't have it so hard after all. Lol. Thanks Curtis. Love the vlogs.

I keep a playlist of music, starting from music that matches my glum mood and then gradually moves me to a more positive mood.

One thing I did especially while I was in the army specifically in Afghanistan was to stay motivated and focus on positive things that are happening. I also think it's important to look at life through short intervals during times of struggle, long term goals are hard to achieve, having more short term goals (small less significant or not ) can really lift you up. I think people get overwhelmed because progress doesn't happen the way they want or expect. If all else fails I just go huntin I enjoy nature.

Some pretty sound advice here, I think a large part of avoiding burning out for me, , is remembering the reasons that got you started in the first place. Whether it be with music, farming or whatever. Having a purpose in life is important and you gotta remember your roots and what inspires and motivates you. I love the idea of urban farming because you are being innovative and resourceful with what you have at your disposal, instead of accumulating wealth by any means necessary, with little regard for the environment. that is part of the reason i enjoy watching your videos so much too. Not to mention the philosophy of abundance like you talk about, trying to provide people with as much as you possibly can whether it be knowledge or produce while still turning a profit.

How true, how true. At times I look at the total picture and know That I can not complete every thing. Then you only do what you can and accept it. NOT EASY!!!
