Elderly & Pain - What Medications work and What Doesn't

Today I want to talk about elderly and pain as well as what medications work and what doesn't. I have become so frustrated seeing my elder patients, not get their needs addressed.

A back story: One of my elders just went to the hospital - she had her knee give way. As I understand the doctor said, “Oh, It’s just knee arthritis.”

It is important that we figure out for each elder what’s causing pain so we can relieve it.

Using long-term intrinsic or naproxen increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, stomach bleeds, and kidney failure, as well as high blood pressure and heart failure. It's not okay to just give them a couple of Motrin and send them out the door!!

Your elder does deserve to have their pain relieved.
