8 Things You Should Never Decorate With (What to use instead) – Worst Decorating Mistakes

In today’s video, we are talking about the TOP 8 things you should never decorate your home with and what to use instead. I consider some of these items the worst decorating mistakes you can make. Over 18 years in the industry, I have seen decades of good and bad design. And while I love a good trend, there are some decor items that stay on our radar, but just don’t add any style or functionality to your space and I’m here to tell you- YOU CAN DO BETTER!

After watching this video, I hope you gain a better understanding of the decorating mistakes you might not even know you’re making and be inspired by all the options of what to use instead.

I have decorated with ALL of these items in the past 🙈 and lemme tell ya, simply REMOVING the offensive items will breathe new life into your grown up space! Which decor item is the worst of the worst?!

Decorating goes far beyond a nice room. The biggest mistake I made for over 30yrs was to live with a hoarder who didn’t want any decorations (dust collectors) or me to show my personality in the house. He decorated with boxes, paper work and junk over every surface including walkways and floors. Making someone feel like they’re not important enough to live in their own home or sleep in their own bed is a form of abuse. I felt like we never had a home, just a house for his stuff. It was implied he’d complain if I wanted to put artwork up. Having my home reflect me and allow me to thrive is the best mental health. ❤

On the topic of pet peeves, I have to say, that alcohol bottles displayed as decor are really bad and way more common than they should be.

In my opinion, something is only a decorating 'mistake' if its only purpose is to impress others, rather than bring joy to the person using or inhabiting the space.

Not having negative space …. Resting spaces for the eye brings a sense of peace.

Love that you included what to use instead rather than just leaving us wondering. Also you admitted that you have grown and matured over the years in your design taste, indicating that it's okay to not get it right the first time, especially when just starting out. Thanks for all your help.

All trends come and go... We don't decorate our homes for other people who might not have the same as us sense of beauty, so... decorate surround yourself with items you love, make a space that reflects your personality and interests.

Word art is like TATTOOS……they just don’t believe one is Enough….Talk about overdoing something….my friend had three signs that said GATHER….I told her to gather them and put them in the goodwill bin! You look so pretty in this video…love your hair. Hugs carolyn

I love all the tips except not sold on dried flowers. Well-dried, preserved flowers keep their colour and their beauty whereas plastic flowers are just so gross no matter how ‘real’ they look. Faux greenery brings such a sad energy.

I so agree with you. I once visited a home that was decorated with items that the family collected from their travels around the world. Nothing from Home Goods! It was a fascinating place. Decorate with things that mean something. Even if they are pictures of your family in beautiful frames found at a thrift store. I love your channel Julie! ❤

I feel the same way about the Chanel, Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton coffee table book. Please put this on the " lets not and say we didn't list".

Some dried plants are very beautiful though. I love cotton stems, bittersweet vines and carduus for example.

I LOVE the large beads!! And they don’t need a story.

Thanks for this! Gosh, I hate those mass-produced oversized beads 😂 Another pet peeve is the same interior-design books that everyone is using as decor (especially a certain book titled "Live Beautiful"). While it's great to decorate with books that reflect your interests, using just interior-design books feels like virtue-signalling in a way, not sure if that makes sense 😅

Wow Julie such a helpful video! It explained why certain decor choices can make a room look cluttered or dated, and offered great alternatives.

Amazing! this was eye-opening! Common decorating mistakes in simple terms, making it easy to understand and what to avoid. Now, I know to steer clear of those outdated decor choices and opt for more timeless options. much thanks Julie.

Feng shui or not. I like my dried herbs. They speak of fragrance and healing to me. A bunch of dried lavender is dead, but when I look at it and catch the scent all I see is the blossoming plant in the bright Summer sun.
