Sleep and Mental Health

It can be surprisingly difficult for us to accept that a major cause of much of our mental distress may be nothing so dramatic as a lack of sleep. Getting better requires us to take our need for sleep seriously.

FURTHER READING

“Part of the reason why many of us have a tangled and unhelpful relationship to sleep can be traced back to the way we first learnt about the subject many years ago. Parents of small children tend to be very careful about bedtimes. They favour early nights, they give their babies plenty of naps throughout the day, they think a lot about black-out curtains, they are quick to diagnose many instances of bad temper as stemming from a background deficit of rest and while they may be indulgent in some areas, they are likely to be entirely implacable in any negotiation over routines: seven p.m. lights out, no ifs ands or buts…”

I read a funny tweet that rang true to me
"If you hate everyone, then you need to eat.
If you think everyone hates you, then you need to sleep"

We're overworked. We try to have more free time by staying up later. If we worked less, we would sleep more.

I wonder how school affects people’s relationship to sleep? Nearly every student you’ll meet is sleep deprived

Few things are as important as good sleep. When you sleep badly, you can't engage in all the other long-term positive habits!

Sleep deprivation makes us moody and irritable, and impairs brain functions such as memory and decision-making. It also negatively impacts the rest of the body – it impairs the functioning of the immune system, for example, making us more susceptible to infection.👍

She has a nice voice but there's something about Alain's I have associated with learning, I genuinely think I retain more information when he is speaking - a brilliant video nonetheless!

I like staying up late because its the most peaceful time where I have no real responsibilities or pressures.

The best experience in life is a good nights sleep or even an afternoon siesta. Totally underrated.

All of this seems very true to me. I'm a night owl and because of the daily routine established by the university I very often don't sleep enough. However, when there is a chance, when I can go to sleep earlier or get up later, I immediately feel more optimistic about myself and the actions I take.
