It's not just your imagination -- you're more irritable when you're low on zzzzs. Sleep scientist Matt Walker explains how our nightly slumber affects the emotional centers in our brains, and why we can think of sleep as first aid for our feelings.

Sleep is as, if not more effective, than medication when it comes to managing my bipolar disorder. When I got into crisis, my sleep was so disturbed, nightmares, oversleeping in the day, manic insomnia etc. Slowly shifting my sleep to a regular pattern really helped regulate my mood and reduce nightmares. I can have an episode of mania or depression triggered solely by 4 nights of disturbed broken sleep. This stuff really matters.

The animations and Matt Walker's ability to simplify complex ideas go so well together!
This series is a really good example of how ideas should be communicated.

When i got checked for the first time to get diagnosed for depression, the primary thing the doctor prescribed me was to get enough sleep. Figures. Thanks for the helpful video!

This link discussed between sleep and emotions via this Ted series youtube channel and Matt Walker is metaphorically eye opening and enlightening, especially since I am both rationally and intuitively realizing that certain events/circumstances that I created in my life are partially coming up as a way to help remind me to relax and rest more often. After accessing this youtube video I intend to be more consistent with at least 6 hours of resting in my bed at least 4 to 5 times a week andor more each week.

Good series pls more! I love it when good fair scientific studies reinforce everything we read in medical text books. It gives you an other perspective and when you try to explain or understand something is more concrete and reinforced.

I worked night shift for years. I got 2-4 hours of sleep every day, sometimes even less. I was always angry and fighting with friends and coworkers. Everything made me mad. I ended up getting fired and losing my wife too. Now I know sleep is extremely important!

I think rather than being disconnected, we as “ceo” of our brain may be putting way too much stress on the amygdala because we feel like we can compensate our lack of sleep like that.

So were not disconnected. Were just making bad decisions.
Could try to test this by getting people to be sleep deprived, that have a good history of having little sleep.

Naps as emotional first aid, I've been practicing this for years. On another note, when you describe something as the "most evolved" whatever it makes me a lil crazy

Past couple weeks I've been staying up til about 4/5am. Past few days my OCD has spiked, I'm agitated, low, emotional etc. Might have been easy when I was 13 but obviously not now. My bodies drained 247, trying my best to sleep earlier.
