Confession: I work at a second-hand store. If I ever want something trendy all I have to do is wait a few months and loads of them get donated. I can't tell you how many Ipsy bags, old coach purses, fashinova boots, and Shien tops I come across while sorting at work. Tumblrs, those clear fridge bins, spinning makeup organizers, bathroom draw shelves even skin care fridges all the things that I've seen blow up on tik tok get donated. If they don't get bought they get tossed in the trash. It's a massive waste.

We're so balls deep in consumption that even a critique of overconsumption contains a clothing ad.
Nice video btw

You were looking for the word ‘exacerbated’, meaning to make the problem at hand worse. I got you girl ❤

As someone who is not even an american, i'm confused how people on tiktok got or buy those things real quick. Most of them are not even familiar to me, like, why the hell i should buy an overpriced bagel chopper machine when i already have a super sharp kitchen knife that i can found in grocery storeー 💀🗿

I hate the “ restocking trend” because you are literally buying containers you don’t need. The food already comes in their own packaging

As someone who makes my own product and puts a lot of care and effort into creating and packaging it, dropshippers really make me sad and angry. It's so hard to get your brand off the ground when there is a million "small businesses" who sell Aliexpress stuff for inflated prices and take attention away from real crafters. Even Etsy is now full of dropshippers and they completely drown us out 😥

most of these "influencers" have convinced themselves that overconsuption is fine because they'll just donate what they don't like. i really wish thrift stores were more vocal about the amount of clothes that are thrown in the landfield per year because no one will buy them even second hand so these so called influencers could actually see the end result of their crazy hauls

The $700+ Shein girly hauls make me ill. They’ll use the phrase “no ethical consumption under capitalism” as a cop out too like you know that’s not what tf that means. No ethical consumption means NECESSITY. You NEED a cellphone, you NEED clothing, you NEED furniture. You don’t need 16 $5 crop tops and 12 of the same sundress in different colors.

Hearing an ad- especially a SHAPEWEAR ad on this video felt insane

the fact that gen z and tik tokers can sell out warehouses of items in a couple hours but refuse to boycott anything because they “don’t have that kind of power” or “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” IS INSANE

I remember the overconsumption of makeup in 2016. We had people buying new pallettes and lipsticks to the point where they would expire before even really using. You don't need 25 new blushes a month.

My mom is a HUGE Hello Kitty fan, and she bought this like mystery box for 160 dollars, when she showed me what she got, she was really excited, but I realized it all was from daiso and aliexspress, when I showed her she was crushed, she was basically scammed out of about 140-120 dollars.

Overconsumption has become a huge problem. And the start of new trends like the ‘that girl’ trend only adds fuel to the fire because it emphasizes overconsumption and spending money on unnecessary things to make you feel fancy. I feel like people should be able to indulge in things they enjoy like skincare if it makes you happy but it should be reasonable.

I just want to add, brands like shein aren't just bad for the environment, they're horrible for exploited laborers. When you buy fast fashion, you screw over your fellow working-class, real human beings.

😂😂 the irony of having a shapewear ad in the middle of a video about overconsumption…

To reduce overconsumption, I have The List (TM). Basically a list on which I write everything I want to buy and leave it there for at least a few days (it can stay there for more than a year) before buying it. This ensures I'm not compulsively buying. I usually set a minimum amount of time the item has to stay on the list depending on its price, utility, environmental impact, etc. When that time is over, I go back to the list and check if I still want/need the thing. Most of the time, the answer's no.

It's not just tiktok anymore, short form content is literally everwhere and it's starting to get exhausting. It's just so easy to get pulled into hours of scrolling despite being aware that one click will cause such waste of time. Being bombarded with all sorts of content that makes me feel bad about myself and my life no matter which app i click on is irritating tf out of me. We need to have an option available for turning off short form, because social media is heading towards a really awful direction and i don't wanna be a part of whatever the outcome of it will be.

I crochet, I'm a slow fashion creator by hobby. I feel like I'm CONSTANTLY posting about the ethical dilemma that is fast fashion crochet. Because things can be knit with a machine but crochet is always hand made. So if you see something that is crochet in a target or a Hot Topic or an h&m it is most definitely sweatshop labor.

Some time ago I saw an "inspirational" video of a girl saying "inspiring" things such as "It's ok to wear your clothes more than once" girl bye I've been using a sweater of mine for literally 8 years and i still use it now 😭

this has been bothering me for a while. ads are CONSTANTLY disguised as normal videos now. and people will buy literally anything if it goes viral online, especially tiktok. i don't understand how people can be so dense and not realize that they're falling for marketing schemes left and right. humanity rn is truly something else
