JetBrains Fleet -- Visual Studio Code Killer?

Показать описание
Jetbrains have released their all new code editor Fleet into public release today. This is obviously aimed at competing with the juggernaut Visual Studio Code... the question is, how well does it does? Fleet transforms from a fast (aka... fleet) text editor to a full blown IDE with the click of a button.

It's quite impressive how they miss so much of what makes VSCode so useful for me.

Looks like it's not gonna be free, so not really much of a VS code killer.

I kinda forgot, watching this, why I was excited for this editor.

An empty Fleet instance is 500MB ram...

Doesn't seem very exciting to me, because from my own experience and what I see in this video it's not all that lightweight when compared to SublimeText let alone something like vim.
Startup time and responsiveness seem to be on paar with VSCode and given the time it takes to enable smart features I could just open the proper IDE which offers a more complete experience. The smart features seem to be most similar to VSCode for the supported languages, though VSCode has the benefit of an insane ecosystem that is difficult to replicate.

I think the toggle for smart mode is kind of pointless. I always want code completion when I use something like VS code. If I want something lighter I use notepad++, and that’s faster than fleet. Also if fleet won’t be open source it will not be anywhere near as successful as code

"(free version) Requires login and periodic connection to JetBrains servers to verify the project."
Burn it. Bury it. Throw it into the sea.
This vscode "killer" will not work without internet connection. I'm not even interested in trying. I don't need prima donna editor which can decide that it will not work on my project.

I doubt it will kill VSCode. Biggest reason being that VSCode is free software. Beside the download button on the main page it says that Fleet is 'Free to use during public preview', hinting that the software may be locked behind a pay-wall on release.

paid for commercial use = useless. VS Code is free for companies.

I doubt it will be a VS Code killer due to the pricing model. The fact that you have to pay for some stuff, that is.

I really like to see an iPad app or web version that connects to a server. That’d be a game changer.

Looks cool but being a commercial product that will certainly have limitations for free plan (if it exists in the future) I don't think it can compete with VS Code.

It'll take a lot to peel me off of VS Code, I prefer it to both Visual Studio and CLion personally. But hey if it's free to try I can at least give it a try, JetBrains has a good reputation.

I don't see too much different with VSCode. And this one allow to use only for non-commercial, educational or open-source projects. So, VS Code is still the best for now.

Looks great! VS Code deserves a great rival and Fleet looks promising. We have just released live debugging plugins for PyCharm & WebStorm, I'm wondering if we will be able to use those plugins with Fleet.

Can something really be called "light" or "lite" if it requires the JVM to run?

At least it's not Yet Another Electron App™

Pretty neat. If it's as well received as it's IDEs then it will be good. Fits right into Jetbrains Space. But as a stand-alone, it has serious competition from lapce.

it work almost fine on my M1 Max laptop for Go. Only issue I faced if doesn't fetch aws packages and so no auto suggestion on some of S3 structs. But as I go as open api.go in aws then it indexes the package and works fine (before next dependency added :)

I was very confused until I realized you meant Visual Studio Code, not Visual Studio. They are two very different editors.
