JetBrains Fleet — Public Preview Launch Demo

Fleet, our new distributed polyglot editor and IDE, is now available to everyone as a public preview!

It has been built from the ground up using our IntelliJ Platform on the backend and a brand new UI and distributed architecture.

Maybe for Java it's super, but for other environments like TypeScript it's still painful and missing lots of features. But I keep fingers crossed, because VSCode needs a competitor 👍

I was looking forward to it for some time, but being targeted to be VSCode competitor, it is okay to miss some stuff that Webstorm is having, but on the other hand if it is not free and wide community supported, it is going to fail miserably. The other option is for this Fleet to be one and only IDE that will eventually replace Webstorm, IntelliJ and all other variations. So far it is okay, if you ask me, and has some really interesting solutions, but is still not enough to challenge VS Code. I am saying this as a mainly Webstorm user.

Tried it out a minute ago! The two most important things missing are an extension API/extension marketplace and a vim mode. Besides that, working on a rust project was pretty seamless.

I see what you’re try to do with this lightweight editor at the start, but the killer for me is that basic autocomplete is seems to be behind the “Smart mode”, which turn it into WebStorm.

If your goal is to get people into more IDEs, that’s a pretty hard jump for the basics.

Autocomplete and other basic things should be upfront, with the other IDE stuff in the back, to really ease us in.

This looks great, I see a lot of value in a stripped down IDE. I’d love to see improved extensibility over vsc. Plugin DSL’s would be cool!

I'm extremely comfy with VSCode but it's always exciting to see a competitor. I love the clean interface. I think JB could really take some of the market share of VSCode by focusing on performance, a clean, uncluttered UI, and on good defaults.
Just consider what a plugin like GitLens does: provides dramatically improved Git integration to VSCode, but also heavily clutters up the UI and degrades the performance. Now imagine having such functionality at minimal cost to performance or UI clunkyness.

Perfect timing. You made my evening with this news, guys. I`m starting to learn Kotlin and I need an IDE for that. Eclipse is great for Java but i have problems to use it with Kotlin. IntelliJ Idea is too heavy for my old laptop. I though that i have no choice but use VSCode, but now i know for sure what i`m going to use! Thank you so much.

Got it. tested it. It's great The UI is awesome - so clean. To have different tools on each "tool space" is a great idea. The shortcuts are well done and intuitive. Can't wait to switch to my theme set (atom code coloring) ;-).

When it comes to writing plugins, how is it planned to be approached by developers (APIs, Marketplace availability and what not) or is it still being considered?
