Kind of crazy to think vscode is almost 10 years old now. Fleet seems cool, I could see it becoming a really nice experience over time. Its got “good bones”.

I'm a Webstorm user and Fleet beta user.. I was shocked they released it today because it is so unusable. I'm with you Scott.

8:09 "I couldn't find on their site anywhere that said that" there's a Fleet Feature Matrix right on the fleet's website which tells you exactly which features are supported and which ones are in-progress/not supported. Although it's a bit outdated as of now, but it should give you a general glimpse of what's going on in the Fleet development.

Hi Scott, thanks. You saved me some time. Guess I don't need to look into this any further for a while.

Omg Scott!! I recognized your voice from the syntax podcast! It’s my first time seeing you, the video just popped up on my feed - I just thought it’s pretty cool, also good work with the podcast 👏🏼

Hmm, as a long time WebStorm user, Fleet looks like a different shell for the IntelliJ platform. So basically a new WebStorm. The IntelliJ versions of the features you showed work pretty well. Like the "find duplicates" warning. I use that one often. It seems like they haven't fully integrated all the IntelliJ features to the new Fleet frontend. It does give it a bit of a bad first impression imo.

Having to use the Toolbox App is weird indeed. Toolbox is only helpful if you have multiple JetBrains products (I use a couple). I think it is more easy to distribute the preview this way. All the other IDE's can be installed stand-alone, I would assume that Fleet in the end can be installed stand-alone as well. It would be the first app that would not support that otherwise.

Also I would guess they are trying to push a new IDE to be able to give some attention to Spaces. Well, it will be fun to see how this is going to be in a few months from now.

Thanks for this honest preview!

It has now been 6 months since this video. It doesn't appears that Fleet has made as much progress as I would expect.

I have noticed that it has added an option to open Fleet in the current directory in the terminal (Mac) with `fleet ./directory`

When Visual Studio Code came out, you had to change the settings via a file, there wasn't even an interface for it. So I'd give it some time. It's not gonna compete with Code any time soon. But one the community gets involved, it'll grow quickly I'm sure. And for some that use other JetBrains IDEs, it'll probably have some integrations or interfaces for those that Code can't or won't offer.

I really liked Fleet, it is a good editor with good features, but using Java is a mistake, Jetbrains had the chance to make it right and uses a real language, but Java is too heavy and unoptimized, indexing uses 90% of my R5 1600 and uses more than 5GB of my 16GB, this is crazy

If it's not free like vscode it's going to need to bring some amazing features. I think it'll get there within 3years.

man, history of jetbrains is a history of pain. they still rocking that java tech and can only support languages like php. first extension i installed to vscode was c++ extension from microsoft and that worked like a charm. this thingy seems to provide only syntax highlighting for c++. okay.

but i liked how quick themes are changing. i think i saw a lag, perhaps vscode is switching faster, still not a bad renderer, i guess.

Hey can you do a video on VS Code Javascript debug configuration specially ignoring node modules files or any other library files. It is annoying not being able to jump them. Thanks.

Most important question: what theme are you using?

Most of these are features that exist and work well in their existing products. I'm sure it'll work in the new product just as well in time.

As far as themes go, we're set when the material UI themes plugin is updated. I never really relied on jetbrains for their themes

Same experience as me! Extensions shoud've been in the first public release. It's literally what drives adoption

I used VSCode for years, and I switched to WebStorm a little over a year ago. I now use WebStorm, Rider, and DataGrip daily. It was such a great move. Fleet is definitely subpar when it comes to JetBrains IDEs.

Does fleet let you develop directly inside Docker container like VsCode does?
