IMO this is a good business move by JetBrains. It's like dealer offering free crack on the street corner. For sure kids will be hooked on it and don't want to use Visual Studio ever again.

I think this is great because it gives people the opportunity to try it in personal use without needing to buy it.

Yes, can we please have a comparison video? I think VS is great but it needs a rebrand to show more things, Rider has done that and I have no regrets on using till this day.

This is huge for someone who wants to learn C# outside of Windows where Visual Studio is not an option.

Yeah, a little comparison video would be cool to see the differences

In our startup, as a CTO i choose products that help us scale. Right now we are not earning much money so we primarily use products that is either open source or offer free or low cost options for startups. When we scale up we have a list of those products so we plan on paying back to those communities and go up a tier on the paid offerings.

In regards to Jetbrains it would be cool as Nick said to have some sort of offering as Microsoft. It doesnt even has to be 1m Dollars. It could be far less. For me it would be awesome to use a cool product and be able to give something back when that product has helped us find success !

That's (nearly) the best news of the year!
I was having a discussion yesterday at work with a new colleague about Rider (that I use) and Visual Studio (that he uses... for now) and the only downside I found with Rider is - no, was - that there wasn't a free version to use at home for personal projects. This gap is now filled, I'm downloading it right now.

Visual studio has come leaps and bounds over the last year. I guess jetbrains saw it's trajectory and had to make this reactionary move

I instantly suggested this back in August 2023, when Microsoft announced the EOL of VS for Mac for August 2024. I am glad they did finally, so we have now a full scale IDE not only for MacOS, but also for Linux. Having the same tooling across all major operating systems is very valuable for someone like me, who has devices with all of them and just want to work on some projects without caring about which device I am using for it.

My personal use is generally game dev and VS's community licence means I don't have to worry about going on to try and sell anything I make. And given there's no chance of me actually hitting the revenue cap if I do, I can rely on using VS community for free in the long term. Makes using anything else an extemely hard sell if they've not got a comparable licence.

Good business move for JB. I love that you address what I have been doing in comments everywhere. People need to understand that in most cases VS is not free as many think it is. I have been using VS since 2005, with ReSharper since 2012, and I switched to Rider 2.5 years ago. For commercial use in the company I work for. We would have to either buy Rider or VS. I absolutely love Rider and the only thing I regretted was not looking at it earlier. One thing that I was/am missing is proper multi-threaded debugging, however that is coming out soon.

So happy about this. Use it at work since many years and been stuck with VS for private projects and now i can do the switch for those also!

Been using VS since its inception...will take more than a free version to make me switch, especially if I can't use it commercially. However, this is a great move to adopt new devs, they should of done this years ago to compete with VS.

Something cool I saw is that content creators and teachers can use it freely even if they make money. Good on them for promoting education

I use VS2022 and would love to see a detailed comparison with Rider to see if I should move...

This should have been done a long time ago, I don't think I want to move away from VS anymore. Companies tend to go with the Microsoft option and I don't want to use 2 IDE's (Rider for personal use and VS for professional use). The only reason I see that is left is if I ever move over to Linux, which realistically I don't think will happen for a long time yet.

I have been begging for a Rider CE for YEARS. Ever since I started dabbling in Java I've been extremely impressed with how complete and functional Jetbrains' IDEs are. I switched to Linux full-time a couple years ago and a Rider subscription was basically my only option for an IDE (VSCode was too barebones for the OOP convolution that C# tends to bring about); it's been miles ahead of VS ever was.

Rider having a free version should take a massive chunk out of VS's pie, especially for students and hobbyists. When those small-scale devs are in the workforce, they're going to ask for Rider over VS. In turn that means more Rider pro subscriptions. Everyone wins here, Jetbrains, professional devs, hobbyist devs (except MS but they already figured this out 15 years ago).

Im glad they are doing this. Every FOSS project i have been part of that utilizes C# floated the Rider option but getting every single person a licence for it was a pain for new projects where code has not been written yet.
Now that we have no barrier of entry, fantastic move. I can see an uptick of new users starting in FOSS and moving on to professional licenses for work.

Been using Visual Studio at work for about 12 years, all of which with ReSharper. At home I use VS community for personal projects without ReSharper. I've never used Rider but I'll be downloading it to give it a go, and if I think it's worthwhile, I'll push for us to give it a go at work. It costs me nothing to try at home for personal projects, they will likely get a lot of business from people like me trying it at home and then possibly getting their company in on it.

Looking at it from a perspective of a younger person I love the move. Yes, Rider has been already free for educational purposes but getting the student's license while not being a university student was a big hassle (you had to order an ISIC card first). Now with this anyone can just pick it up. It will make Rider more papular in the game dev space. It integrates pretty nicely with Unity (and apparently Unreal, but I cannot personally attest to that), but Visual Studio has always been the go-to, thanks to the community license. Now Rider has more of a chance to shine.
