HOW YOUR AUTHORITARIAN PARENTS AFFECT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH// If you struggle to manage stressful situations, are hypersensitive to criticism, and have an over-reliance on others for approval or affection, chances are that you built those patterns due to growing up with emotionally distant parents.

Even into adulthood, we may still be holding ourselves back by having expectations of our parents to understand us or accept us emotionally, which in turn causes us to feel perpetually frustrated and develop background anxiety. In this video, I'll share some tips on how you can improve your relationships with your emotionally distant parents.

I hope you enjoy the video! I'm right there with you.

I remember movies and cartoons showing how kids and parents say "I love you" to each other and thinking how that doesn't really happen in real life and how it's weird. 😬

I NEVER talked about my feelings everrr because my parents never did. There were more important things for them. Even as a child I always knew that their behavior is limiting me so I always talked to myself and reflected all my feelings. Even though I’m a very peaceful, confident and emotionally strong person now, I don’t know if I’m fully healed yk? Like when I watch these typa videos I always cry cuz I’m so sorry for 8 year old self having to go through these things

It's so relative. My problem is, when I try to talk, they are not ready to adress my reality

My parents never said to me they love me or talk about my emotion and feeling so when I saw other parents saying I love you and asking that to their kids, I got in a state of shock and extremely sad with highest level of resentment and jealousy.

My parents don't respond to the light emotion thing at all. I have been forced to change my expectations very painfully and its hard to accept. I simply cannot express myself with them not my feelings, my needs, my pains, my dreams, or good things that happen to me. I either get no response or shame. It always has to align with how they see fit, any variance outside of that is foreign and unacceptable and must be stomped out immediately. Considering going no contact for awhile.

I remember being about 10 years old and my Mom right in front of me telling another Mom how "she doesn't have many friends." Which was true, and is still true today. But it made me feel like there was something wrong with me.

I appreciate you making this video and offering your services to help others. The part about being hypersensitive to criticism really resonated with me. I hope you continue to do this work as I'll likely be in touch with you at some point on my personal journey. Thanks so much.

I feel like my feelings aren’t cared about by my mom. I’m an adult and I’m a woman attracted to women, and I feel like my mom disregards who I am completely. If I mention to her that I am concerned about my future then she says I only need to be worried about school. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Okay check box for all the facts you talked about. I always tried to eradicate these thoughts in childhood thinking I might lack to understand but now I realize they are always like that. They never made a environment for all these conversations and when I tried they just don't have, time, mind or patience and dismiss the talk instantly.

I know i have to accept them and lower my expectation, i’ve been doing that since idk when, i struggled.. changing myself because … we’ve bern told that “changing is HARDER for adults”. But i still have a hard time letting go feeling annoyed of them. Why do they have the priviledge of not changing themselves, and us the younger ones had to change ourselves for them? Do they ever stop and think? Don’t they know that changing yourself is super hard? and i had to do all of those for my little siblings… please think before you have kids ….

"Yeah sure blame me. It was ALL my fault. Go on your older siblings blame me why not you!?!" Thanks. I guess getting told this backfired since it's partly true!

i'm having to relearn the entire concept of "needs". to my parents, anything higher than physical health and safety was considered a "want".

My mom is extremely cold and distant. She told im alone in this world and I have to accept that. I refuse to accept that kind of perspective and will never make my kids feel alone while im still alive. I now resent my mom because she stopped caring about me long ago. I have decided gone no contact and wish her the best. I don't need that kind of energy in my life.
