Take note: men and priests not being concerned with their looks also applies to folks judging clean shaven clergy.

In primitive churches of the Anglo isles and Northern Europe many christian men cut their beards short or were completely shaven. This was in rejection of the pride that many of the barbarism races in which men had great pride in their beards and hair. We see that come to fruition in the Viking age where men could spend hours each day helping each other dye their hair and braid their beards. Men with short beards were made fun of. It’s beautiful how the small t traditions of our faith can differ but fundamentally come from the same principles.

Well stated, Christ doesn’t care what you look like, who your ancestors were, what school you went to. He cares only that you follow the lords will, believe in his son and trust the word. Think I got it all. 🙏

As a Catholic, I wish our priests and bishops rocked more beards.

The beard Tradition is a cultural tradition. Beards mean different things in different cultures. And the church is not centred around one culture, the church is for the whole world.
Not every tradition is a holy tradition.

Men started shaving roughly 800-500bc in Greece and then Egypt for the wealthy, although in Egypt the beard was removed with tweezers 😢

Also, monks are required to grow their hair and beards for life once they've been tonsured.

First Century Christian Art in the Roman Catacombs portrays a clean-shaven Jesus. Many young Roman Christian martyrs were likewise not rocking a beard when they were fed to the lions or their bodies set ablaze as human torches at night during the Persecutions.

If shaving was good enough for the early martyrs of the Faith then it’s good enough for me.

A long beard takes a long while to grow. Young men and boys might not have an impressive beard. A long beard symbolises a long life and thus a wise, mature and experienced man

I just home normal and humble our priests are. Obviously I’m a bit biased but orthodox priests just truly feel easier to be around and have real conversation with. I meet the Archbishop at orthodox camp as a boy and he had intimate and real faith based dialogue with and answered questions I think other religions wouldn’t let a young boy ask of a high ranking church figure

1 Corinthians 11:14
"Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him"

Thus, “every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head” (1 Cor. 11:4)

The avoidance of vanity is sort of why I consider no trimming or clean shaven to both be valid traditions. It’s that middle ground where style and more importantly vanity can potentially start to creep in. The trends change over the centuries and there’ve been many long periods where certain looks were preferred in contemporary culture. Keep things simple but classy and you’ll do alright.

His response pretty much was "Well, everybody else is doing it. Everyone else has long beards" 😂
