America ~ A Horse With No Name 1972 Extended Meow Mix

After they completed recording their first LP "America", the band could not decide which song to issue first but "I Need You" was the top candidate. They went into the studio one more time to record a song Dewey Bunnell had written that was inspired by his homesickness for America and the desert terrain he experienced when he was living at the Vandenberg Air Force base in California.

"A Horse With No Name" was issued on February 19, 1972 and it peaked at #1 for three weeks on March 25th knocking Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold" off the top of the pop chart. It was a very special time with those two songs at the forefront of pop music and the rich clarity of those two productions that shared the reflective mood of the nation at the time.

In the early 70s America put out some excellent music, I was in my very young 20s and this music was our music… Decade of the 70s gave us absolutely outstanding music from all genres, in my opinion one of the best decades for music

I remember this beautiful song, it was a time of hope and possibilities. We called it soft rock. Music was not segregated in the 70s as it became from the 80s onwards. We were exposed to jazz funk, heavy metal, soul, blues, folk such as the Mamas and Pappas even country and western from Johnny Cash, Rod Taylor, Nashville and flower power - it was a seamless music explosion of youth and glorious.

America deserves to be inducted. They are one of the first bands I remember hearing in my life. Their music has been part of the soundtrack of my life since childhood. They're incredible. The nostalgia of this song.... Reminds me of growing up in Brooklyn ❤

U outdid urself on this one!💜 I loved the original, but this so awesome. America did put out fantastic music, back in the day. But Horse with no Name, will always be my favorite (from age 13, now 62 and beyond!)

My parents were in their early 20s when this came out and they told me a story about how once, during the early/mid 70s when they were on holiday near Perpignan in southern France, they pulled up in this town square in a small town on a baking hot afternoon with no-one to be seen around and this song suddenly came to mind.

They said it was the dusty street with no flowers or trees to be seen under the fierce sun with a hot breeze that made them think of A Horse with No Name and it kinda stuck with them. I like that one!

I was 15 years old when this was released, and, I certainly enjoy this classic song that still sounds great. A moment in time worth repeating, 1972, the glorious era of ROCK & ROLL.

MJ recorded a song called A PLACE WITH NO NAME in which practically used the same melody as AHWNN. The members of america were honored that MJ did his recording. One of very few songs that sampled....

Wow! Wow! Just wow! One of my favorite songs by America just got the Disco Cat treatment and it is even more wonderful. Dan Peek is smiling down from heaven, while Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell are still making music. I hope they check out this extended rendition, they will love it. I sure do. My humble opinion is that those guys must have watched that trilogy of Italian westerns with Clint Eastwood as the Man With No Name, then sat down and knocked out this song. It's been fifty years ago since A HORSE WITH NO NAME soared to the top of the charts. It deserves another listen. So give Disco Cat's remix a listen. What have you got to lose?

Your remix brings out the melodies, especially the bass line, that make this such an evocative and transcendent song. Excellent work.
