I am 66 years old and this song brings back memories. I was in highschool in New Zealand. Only 3 years after the first moon landing and Woodstock, the Beatles had just broken up the optimism of the 60's gave way to oil shocks, Nixon, the 1972 Munich Olympic terror, the Vietnam war was still in the news every day, Mohammad Ali was stripped of his title, the Berlin wall seemed like it would stay up forever and the USA and Russia were always on the verge of nuclear war. We still had black and white TV in those days :) America was one of the many great folk rock bands with messages and songs you could actually sing along to. The last years before the music industry replaced people with video and technology.
