Such a true classic!!!! I was only 7 years old in 1971 when this song came out and I would hear it on the radio. I really did not understand what the song was truly about then but I think I do now! I never get tired of listening to this song. America should be inducted in to the music hall of fame if they have not already been in my opinion!

I interpret this version as the heat really sinking in. He loses track of time and thus recalls the events twice because the heat has gotten to him.
