I think it was Ray Charles who said that Janis was the only singer he knew who could sing five notes at the same time

One of my favorites. Her lives versions are the best. I'm also partial to "Ball and Chain live at Monterey Pop ", "Cry Baby ", and Work Me Lord ".

"She started out a little strong right there"

Well that is Janis -- she knocks on your butt and tears out your guts.

Always, every time you listen to her, for years.

Check out "Misery'n."

She was really a cause celeb in the late 60s and she had quite a cult following in the age of the summer of love, free love, and woodstock. When Amy Winehouse house broke, I immediately thought of Janis. Janis could sing.

From Spain...there will never be someone like her...work me lord from the same show is to me the best.

I love the sort of subtle sloppiness of the playing. It's brilliantly constructed music performed by people who were all the way outside of their minds on this or that chemical. Sober people play immaculately perfect music down to the letter how the sheet music describes it and stoned hippies get lost, miss notes and go off script. The latter might sound bad, but listening to it makes it feel more human, so you can connect with it more. There's beauty in imperfection and honesty in the rough edges. That's a philosophy that I think is due for a comeback. Rock music should never be as refined as it has become.

First time here too. Very raspy, smokey, bluesy voice. Sounds like a female Axl from Guns & Roses (or vise versa lol). Another casualty of the drug/booze fueled hippie days. Sad.
