The woman in the audience was Mama Cass. She was pop music royalty at the time and a helluva singer. The fact that Janice dropped the jaw of Mama Cass is no small thing.

You got to understand that nobody, that's nobody in the white community had ever done anything like that until Janis She was a fan of the R&B black singers back then when others were not, and she covered a few of their songs and blew the audiences away. I remember how she shocked the world back then. She was really special.

Janis bought a tombstone for the late great Bessie Smith her favorite blues singer from the thirties.

Janis Joplin was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.

I love these reaction videos on Janis Joplin. Watching them enjoy her brings joy to this old man's heart. Janis is still touching people 50 + years after her death. RIP JANIS JOPLIN

She was about 24 or 25 here. She unfortunately passed away at 27 on October 4, 1970 due to an relapsed overdose, after being clean for a few months.

You should check out "Summertime", "Get It While You Can", "Cry Baby", "Little Girl Blue", "Me and Bobby McGee", and "Work Me, Lord!" if you REALLY want to experience Janis. Live or studio versions, either are phenomenal.

Janis is Queen

Janis was a performance artist of the highest caliber. I love Cass Elliott's reaction.
Music was so much better back then.

Janis entered the stage at Monteray 1967 a miss nobody - she left it a superstar.

That woman would pour her soul into a song until there was nothing left in her.
