Yes, Janis had one of the most raw - most real and soulful voices ever.
Today's music is so sanitized.

Oh god - Janis Joplin - what a talent. She's one of those one in a million voices - what a total legend, nobody has ever sounded like her before or since. RIP Janis.

Now we're talking. Janis was the voice that brought us all to our feet. "A Woman Left Lonely" and "Little Girl Blue" break your heart, and her singing "Cry Baby" and "Ball and Chain" (live at Monterey Pop for the best shot) will scare your neighbors.

Janis learned to sing by listening to blues artists Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Lead Belly. That's why she adopted the blues sound. "Piece of My Heart" is a romantic funk/soul love song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns, originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967.

Her performance of 'Ball And Chain' at the Monterey Pop Festival has to be one of the greatest live performances ever, she shocked the music industry with her raw power.

Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you both, for such a thoughtful reaction ❤ 💚 💙

This is a cover of Erma Franklin's 1967 release (Erma was Aretha's sister). But Janis made it HER song.

I've heard Janis' voice described as molasses poured over gravel. Unique talent gone too soon.

"Piece of My Heart" is a romantic funk/soul love song written by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns, originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967. In 1968 Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin on lead vocals) covered the song and had a much bigger hit with it. The song has since been remade by several singers, including Dusty Springfield also in 1968, Faith Hill in 1994 and duet version by Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone in 2005.

Janice hands down. The best female singer of her time. She did more in the four years of her life than others. RIP ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Janis Joplin had a great voice since she came out onstage at Monterey Music Festival in 1967 with Big Brother and the Holding Co with the song BALL AND CHAIN. Do remember this one too.

I saw her in concert. (Yes, I'm old), She was PHENOMINAL! There will never be another Janis! She was an absolute force of nature.

Janis is and would have further been the Queen of rock-soul and the ENTIRE world would have known this 100% throughout all the decades if only she hadn't died early at 27 like Jimi and Morrison.

She sang with her whole being. Put everything into it. Sang from the soul.

Her and Tom Jones do a killer song Raise Your Hand. Gotta be the video with the dancing and Janis steals the show. You'll love it!

There was no one like Janis and never will be. She was an original and the raw passion flowed from every pore! Try listening to "Summertime"...it's just beautiful! So glad that you appreciate her. We all need to keep her music, that voice as alive as long as possible! Peace, friends!

Many have sung this but nobody ever brought the raw power of Janis to it - EXCEPT ... there was a tribute to Janis about 10 years ago, I think at the Grammys with Joss Stone, who was great singing "Cry Baby", , and with Melissa Etheridge who was coming off cancer chemo and came out in stage with her bald head and tore the freakin roof off with "Piece of my Heart". The crowd's reaction from seeing her being so powerful and her wild energy was incredible. You should look up a clip on YT

If some other artist did this song pitch perfect, tone perfect, etc… it wouldn’t touch how good this song is. Janis’ raw, unbridled emotion is everything.
