Let's face it filets are delicious and also expensive. This is the method I use to give them a touch of smoke and an amazing sear with all the buttery richness you want in a grilled tenderloin filet.

A few criticisms:
Let the coals ignite properly, saw lots of coals that weren’t ashed.
Forget the pan and butter. If you gonna cook a steak in a cast iron skillet, no need to start the grill. Let grate come to temp, lay steaks in hot zone, cook 1 min, flip, 1 more min, flip again, turn 90 degrees for nice sear marks, flip/repeat, then move to indirect zone to bring to 125ish, then remove from heat, let rest for 5-8mins.
Also, get you some Montreal seasoning, will change your life.

This is a great video. It shows how to EASILY grill very lean meat, but still get charcoal taste.
