The reason they’re using their traps is to get more height on the lateral raise by elevating their shoulders but at the SC joint so not helping their deltoids at all. It’s desperation

Squat University has a good wall warmup excersice to help que good shoulder position and prevent shrugging during presses that I imagine would still be applicable here.
