Dr. Al Garza will be discussing Psalm 82. Is it talking about a council of gods in heaven or men who are judges on the earth?

Can I ask why God says you shall die like men if they are already men. They were gonna die anyway. Surely the punishment of mortality can really only be painful to an immortal

Thank you. I do find it weird that ANE people are convinced it excludes human rulers when not only do we have references in the Torah, but even ANE civilizations viewed their human kings as being a part of a Divine Council. (not saying that these human kings were real gods- just that this language wouldn't have necessarily excluded human rulers, even by pagan standards)

in 1973 dr F. de Graaff wrote a challenging book on Psalm 82 called Als goden sterven, when gods die, related to the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. That book caused a lot of turmoil in Holland.
To De Graaff it is no question what gods mean: gods mean gods.

Interestingly enough I just read a blog that used the reference of jannes and jambres to say that Paul was quoting the book of jubilees. Basically to validate that book.

Can't impose a targum reading on a text which predates the targum. The targum is rabbinic but the Tanak is prior to rabbinic times

Well, you're misunderstanding of the Hebrew word elohim is already wrong. El nor elohim does not mean God as you say it is. It's not plural for as in Gods either.
