I Re-Gained Muscle In My 50's With This Simple Adjustment

Ego lifting caused me to have injuries and miss a lot of work out time. I got better results when I lightened the weights and focused more on mind muscle connection. I had a better chance to grow when I didn't miss time in the gym due to constant injuries.

I'm 56 and I go into watching these "over 50" videos with skepticism, but I liked this one. It is pretty much telling me to do what I already do. A variation of Mike Mentzer's lifting theory. I warm up and stretch lot more than I did when I was young, I give myself much more time to recover, and I pay a lot more attention to how my body feels. If you still care what other people think after 50 you have more to work on than your body.

Use cables! Seriously it's a safe way of training with intensity and constant tension through full length of motion!

At 56, I picked up my first ever pair of dumbbells seven months ago. This is stellar advice. Something I can definitely do. Thanks

I'm 57 and I find that having a goal to lift heavier as time goes on works better for me. I tried lifting lighter weight and more reps but I wasn't seeing any progress at all. I only do about 4 exercises of whatever my target muscles are for the day but I increase weight after each rep and I go heavier as my body allows. I also find using intensity boosters such as drop sets and supersets help me a lot. I guess everyone is different and we have to try and see what works best for us. I'm 60lbs away from my max bench when I was 20 yrs old. I hope to reach and pass that max bench in the next 6 months. Good luck to everyone and just be careful because ego lifts as he said will get you hurt

I'm 70, and I've been lifting consistently for about one and a half years. I lost about half a year due to injuries from heavy weights and bad form. I dropped about 60 pounds in the past two years. I have no plans to stop lifting, but I'm never going to go back to lifting weights that are too heavy.

53 and went to body weight exercises. Push ups, pull ups, chin ups, and stretching, weightless leg exercises and short sprints. . What a difference. Strength and muscle gains.

I’ll be 72 this month. Started with bands maybe 3 yrs ago and Started collecting some weights a yr ago. I work hard and first sign of pain I take a few days off. First time in my life I see lats, traps and abs. Good advice youngster.

I am in my 70’s still lifting only about a third of my best lifts, but I am still lifting and enjoying it. Worrying about people in the gym watching you is a LOL moment - those people are most likely looking at themselves instead of watching you!

I’m almost 55 and have been exercising every morning in the week days. The key for making progress is consistency, and being injury free will give you consistency! Everyday I exercise by telling myself that I should be careful because I need to come back in the gym the next morning! I’m the oldest in my gym and the only one who comes every morning!

Im, 62 and started lifting again. I do heavy weights but I do everything slow and with full range of motion.

I hurt my rt shoulder during my teens and again 5 months ago. I started benchpress a few weeks ago with only the bar. And now using 45 plates on each side, and that's it. I'm not ashamed, because it is what it is.

On everything else, I either lift the whole rack or or add to the stack. ( planet fitness, not a real gym, but it's what i can afford).

My deadlifs are getting stronger at 420lbs now. I go slow going up and going down. Complete pause at the bottom.

I think going heavy is ok, but going slowly and pausing at the top and bottom of any exercise is key. At least for me.

Oh and really good warm ups. I just use the bar on many warm ups to start. Just to line up my joints and muscle fibers for the exercise.

Also i do a 3 minute rest between sets no matter the exercise. I'm over cautious on that. I want full concentration, and my body restored for every set.

I'm not getting paid and i don't do contest, so I take my time. 2 to 3 hours in the gym. Included with 30 minutes of yoga most days.

I'm wondering, do most guys think I'm wrong? I read in some comments, "Don't fix it if it aint broke." It's working for me so far.

✌️😊

56 yo and I swear by yoga, helps me stretch and keep limber. It kills me that I cant lift what I used to but I focus more on form over anything and like lighter weight for more reps. Like you if I go heavy I get all kinds of aches and pains.

💯 I learned myself with getting injuries such as tendinitis and and a back problem that won't go away. Moderate weight up to 15 reps is my go to now

Great info! I am still a younger lifter but have trained my entire life and this is good advise at any age! The people who say train like it is your last workout are fools! Train like you want to be able to do it forever! There is no substitute for resistance training for longevity and overall health in my opinion! Forget ego! If you knew how little people at the gym actually pay attention to others you would realize to do you and forget about what others think! Stay strong, stay disciplined and be the best version of YOU that you can be! Stay humble and happy!

I appreciate your input. I’m currently just starting out with dumbbells, and I’ve never been a weight training kind of guy. I’m pushing 65 and I already have physical problems, so I’m forced to go very slow and use light weights, focusing on form rather than strength. Patience is my greatest ally, and ego is my enemy…God Bless everyone who is trying to take care of their body.

I agree with this video; this is a good channel. Keep posting. I've lifted for many years and my doctor tells me I'm a young 75. I presently think the best lifting takeaway is a statement on an internet t shirt which reads "I can't understand why I'm the same age as all these old people".
