I worked security for many years and I always told people the best way to gauge what you need is to do a security jo on a construction site.... its 12 hours in a vehicle ( usually at night)with no water, food, entertainment. Its a good way to see what you'll need, especially with different seasons as well. Yes I had a pistol with mags but the things I needed most were toilet paper, water, food, snacks, books, ipad, flashlight, weather gear, ways to recharge my phone etc. I suggest everyone to sit in their vehicles for 12 hours and see what supplies are most important !

Demcad, here's a you live in a flood prone area or perhaps as a precaution to a leak, I would recommend shelving for your prep supplies. Maybe about a foot or 2 off the ground, just to keep your investment dry and undamaged.

I recently started buying one jar of instant coffee per week and storing them back just for bartering. We can't grow coffee beans in this area and like you said about the sugar; when the items of habit are cut off cold turkey, people will trade about anything... I also think Off bug repellent is a good one to stock up on.

Prep items from the swamp land #2. In ours cars, the get home bags are about the size of a shoe box and they only has one strap to hand on the shoulder. What's in it? one Sawyer MINI water filtration system, Silky GomBoy 8" inch folding saw, 12" solid tang knife, thick poncho, I can't remember the name but it good for sleeping in and keeping you dry. two emergency blankets, for what I don't know I just have them in there. one ferro rod. One 16 oz plastic water bottle filled with minute made rice. I also have a oxygen absorber in the bottle. a 1qt stainless steel canteen with 0.5qt stainless steel cooking cup, Titanium Flatware Knife Fork Spoon Set. Whistle, small tube of superglue and 1/8 Braided nylon rope. My wife also had me put one can of veena sausage in it witch I change out every year. We always carry two 16 oz water bottles in our cars. That about it for the car. We also have water boots and a change of clothes in the car. Why do we have get home bags in the car? My wife and I are old and to walk more then 15 miles in a day most likely wouldn't happen so we stay prepared for one overnighter. This was not a how to comment, it's just how I do it in the swampland.

Salt is not bizarre, you nailed it. The word salary comes from salt because the Roman soldiers were paid in salt. Also, Salzburg, Austria earned its place of honor due to its salt mines. We cannot live without salt.

Demcad.. You said it perfect.. Sugar, really never hear anyone mention sugar. It's a vital role in recovering addicts, or even people with diabetes.

Keep up the great work.

I learned everything I need to know about prepping barter items from the pandemix. Top five should be,

5) Toilet paper single ply
4) Toilet paper double ply
3) Toilet paper quilted
2) Toilet paper quilted triple ply scented
1) Toilet paper quilted triple ply scented with a box of .22 shells

Whiskey, vodka and other alcohol which can be used as fuel, drinking, medicine (make a herbal tincture like echanessia). My dad lived in 1930s and said that was being traded during the great depression

In Venezuela those may have been barteritems in the beginning. But there was one thing people really bartered…

Fire

Aka matches in the beginning.

Then lighters.

Then they bartered for gas for those lighters.
Butane refills are still quite cheap, so are lighters.
Worth a thought.

I liked all your items on your top 5, especially spices. Very thoughtful.

For other items, research what Venezuela used for barter items. Condoms. Soap. Deodorant. Cigarettes. Alcohol. Laundry detergent. But mostly it's food. Rice. Flour. Milk. Pastas. The smaller packaging the better.

I agree in never bartering a gun, magazine, or ammo. Why arm someone who now knows you have supplies.

if you can get cheap overproof(usually ~151) rum can use as disinfectant/possibly run a vehicle(not ideal based on price etc, but as starting fluid or somethin), besides you could always dilute it down if you wanted to drink it and didnt like it as the over proof

maybe drink mixes like koolaid etc dehydrated flavor stuff, bulk spices etc

Just had 2 of those same water containers you have fail on me after 6+ years. Stored in a cool dark place (my closet). Drenched my carpet.

#1 will be clean water, especially in urban areas. During SHTF, water utilities will cease to function and sewer systems will back up within 1-2 weeks... most people have no clue about this. Get what you need now because "bartering" will not be safe at all. When people are desperate, they do desperate things. Trust no one.

Making liquor valuable skill, easy to learn. Just don't tell you make it, you just know where to get it you tell folks.

Having a variety of different items at different values gives you more options to get what you need outta somebody else
