Tampons. I got a bed case of toilet paper, then sever boxes of tampons. Put them in the holes of the toilet paper and between the rolls, saves space

Square Foot Gardening! I was so excited to find that book at a Goodwill this year!

Five years later and your advice still holds and hits harder than it may have 5 years ago.

tools. most people in cities dont have things like shovels, wrenches, hatchets and axes, but in a survival situation things like that would be invaluable (given you know how to use a hatchet or axe). any tool would be worth stockpiling in a number of 3 to 4, especially if its useful. they last for a long time, even if used (but not abused) and when things fall out of order, you can trade them with people who need em

In addition to all the items below, which are GREAT. Knot-tying. Sounds strange, but learning a good half dozen knots, and some rope, fishing line, dongles, etc. Good stuff. Also, plain steel wool and a 9v battery will start a nice fire. Just an FYI.

On the note about seeds, purchase plastic containers to store them in. It gives you a chance to store larger quantities in water/airtight containers that can be easily stored, moved, portioned out and hidden without risk of them germinating.

If you store things like sugar and spice and everything nice for the purpose of bartering then invest in a scale. A simple non electrical will enable you to divide your product into smaller quantities for maximum profits.

Really great info. A great way to stock up on antibiotics is to purchase fish antibiotics from your local farming store. These antibiotics come in pill form and you can get amoxicillian or tetracycline. There are no additives and it is cheap. I have used them for years. Many nurses in my area use them as well. just read up on how to use them dosage wise.

Small containers to put your trade good in. Coffee and tea as well as other things are great to barter, but come in large sizes. If you're able to barter the entire package, great, but you'll be more likely to strike up a fair deal by opening the package and extracting smaller amounts to trade.
Small hard plastic empty containers can be stored indefinitely and can be had for cheap at the dollar type stores.

I surely would not consider bartering an entire bottle of booze for just anything. My thoughts were to barter by the shot..small cheap containers to put a shot of booze...prolong the supply, same with tobacco, get pipe tobacco and papers to roll their own and barter in small portions. Along with this have book matches.

Drinking iodized water will also give you the runs. Any water that is given out by the national guard; out of a truck might treated like this. You could end up with the buffalo trots (runs). Imodium would be a must for me.

On the subject of barter items. We have decided to avoid "high ticket items" for bartering. Items that are reasonably desirable are fine, but items in "high demand" are nothing you want people to know you have. It just won't work. You will either be robbed of the items on the way in ...or the equally valuable items (you bartered for) on the way out. The more something is "needed", the more justified they will be in stealing it or killing for it, without hesitation or guilt. Especially if they cannot afford it, ...and it cannot be easily reproduced, or ever produced again without a reasonable recovery of our civilization.

Also, don't kid yourselves for a single moment. Precious metals will be absolutely worthless, save pure silver ...for its medicinal potential. Precious metals only have value (even today) because they are worth "money". Their values are measured in a given currency. And you are not likely to prove authenticity, purity, weight, or ever make "change" for a transaction. Not to mention, its rarity and scarcity will make precious metals a poor currency if everyone doesn't have it. And, sadly, they simply have no other value but to be currency. The economic velocity would be stagnate. That, combined with scarcity, would render them as hot potatoes or the "old maid". Again, until a recovery of civilization and a reestablished metals market.

Items best traded or bartered much later on in the timeline will be raw materials (or partially refined materials) that only have value to those who have the skills and abilities to further refine them. Wool to the spinner, yarn to the weaver, material to the seamstress, ...etc. Sooner or later an economy emerges. Prior to that, nonrenewable consumables will dominate. The biggest problem is the principle of supply and demand. Renewable surpluses will have little value ...because they are "surpluses" and are "renewable". And the pre-collapse stockpiles of non-renewables will eventually run out. The transition will need to happen in short order to prevent a "second" collapse.

To insure survival, bring skills with you into this future. Stockpiling antibiotics and gunpowder is great. The ability to produce it makes you a king. Would you rather have eggs or chickens?

LIGHTERS! You can get a 100 pack for $15 on amazon, but I guarantee they will be worth MUCH more when people no longer have gas or electricity.

All precious metals do is buy you time. When a collapse happens cash will be king for a short time then gold and silver. Eventually a bucket of wheat will be worth more than a bucket of gold.
