Our eye colour seems uniquely tied up with our individuality, particularly given that eyes are probably the most expressive part of our anatomy. Here is what we know about how eyes can also deeply reflect your ancestry.

Green eyes here! I’ve been wearing sunglasses for decades no matter what season or weather because of light sensitivity. I sometimes get the oddest looks from others who haven’t a clue. On the upside, I have fewer crows feet!

I have an amber eyed granddaughter…basically yellow. Her sister has red headed, ice blue, their brother black eyes. Definitely full siblings as the family has a genetic disease they’ve inherited and had extensive genetic testing to identify their faulty gene. The children all look completely different. Genes are fascinating. My eyes, slate grey.

This explains why my eyes seemingly change from hazel to green; it depends on what light they're reflecting. I'm nearly 60 years old and, though I knew it had something to do with what I was wearing and where I was, I never knew the mechanics behind it. My driver's licenses over the years list me with either green or hazel eyes because the people at the dmv always saw a different color 😄Thank you for clearing up the mystery!

Hazel here. I had a school counselor that had silver eyes. I had trouble listening to her because I was fascinated by those beautiful sparkling eyes.

I read that eye and skin color is adaptive. Those with lighter skin and blue eyes had ancestors who lived in more overcast countries with more cloud and rain/snow. England and Norway are examples of darker environments. The light skin allows for more vitamin D to be produced in a darker environment. Lighter eye color also allows for more light to penetrate the eye so sight is better in such environments. I find all of this fascinating.

My Mom had hazelly-brown eyes, and my father a greyish-green; after the normal blue of babyhood, mine changed to green, and still are. Not a bright green, but still a shade of green, with no hazel or grey. People have always commented on my eyes; in fact, a woman I was talking with a few days ago noticed the color and complimented them. I'm Germanic descent on Moms side, Scots-Irish mix on my Dads.

I was born with violet eyes, (and Distichiasis [extra row of eyelashes] same genetic mutation as Elizabeth Taylor). They faded/changed to a grey/blue in the first year or so.
But damn how does being horrifically blinded by light on basically any days that aren’t super overcast, not affect survivability?!

I had a pet dog who was a mixed breed of Irish setter and German shepherd who had one blue eye and one brown eye, I gave her the name Bing Bing. She was a good and friendly pet that eventually died from old age. I still miss her friendliness with me and anyone who met her. 🐶

I have hazel eyes, but depending on my mood, health and weather, they can look light brown to green, occasionally even a yellow green.

My family is German, although DNA indicates we have some Scandinavian ancestry, too. My late father had greenish hazel eyes with auburn hair, as do I. My mother has green eyes...which upon close inspection are blue with yellow "spokes" that makes the green color. My brother has blue eyes and blond hair. All three of my sons have blue-gray eye color, similar to their Irish father's eye color. I remember reading that Julius Caesar once described the Germans as having auburn or red hair and hazel eyes.

One thing I didn't hear mentioned is while brown eyes perform better in bright light blue eyes have an increased efficiency in low light vision. This had a great impact on northern peoples during winter with less available daylight and prime hunting happens at dusk and dawn.

My dad had brown eyes and black hair and pale skin. My mum had grey eyes, red hair and massive freckles. My brother and sister had dirty blonde hair. My brother had brown eyes, my sister has grey eyes. I had chestnut hair and I have hazel eyes. Amazing amount of variation possible in one family. And yes - VERY light sensitive, my eyes. Already had one cataract operation.

There's been a lot of recent developments with the study of genetics involved with eye color and there are at least 150 genes found to be responsible so far.

I love having green eyes, but yes, mine are very light sensitive and I have to wear dark sunglasses outside all the time. Interestingly, depending on where I am, my eyes can sometimes turn lighter green. When I'm in powerful Taos, NM, they get really green. People thought I was making it up, but I have taken pictures before/after to prove it.

Hazel here. My husband too. I think hazel eyes are super pretty because there is a blend of colors which is unique to each individual. My moms eyes are rich brown and my dad has hazel eyes. So I definitely picked up on the recessive genes there. I'm also non dominate handed. I use each hand for different tasks. My right hand is stronger, while I have more fluid control of the left so write and eat left handed. But use right handed scissors and other implements because left made items seem backwards to me.😂 I'm a total rarity physically. But also not odd at all.

I'm of Indian descent. My mum's side of the family has different types of hazel/brown eyes. For instance my grandfather had amber eyes which my sister inherited, and my great aunt has hazel eyes that are a mix between light brown, gold with a dark green ring at the edges of the iris. My aunt has rich milk chocolate looking sort of eyes and my mum has wine brown eyes (kinda like the colour of dark red wine). I inherited my dad's side of the family, who have very dark eyes that look like black glistening mirrors. They kinda look like I have a permanent sparkle. It's interesting how there is different variation within the brown eyed genes - I know people tend to lump all brown eyed people together and call them "boring" but personally the variation is pretty interesting.
